Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gatlin will learn about Arctic animals, including their habitats, characteristics, and behaviors, through engaging activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Access to a comfortable space for activities
  • Knowledge of common Arctic animals (e.g., polar bears, seals, penguins, arctic foxes)

Activities

  • Arctic Animal Drawing: Gatlin will draw his favorite Arctic animal on paper using crayons or colored pencils. Encourage him to use lots of colors and to think about what the animal looks like in its natural habitat.

  • Animal Movement Game: Play a game where Gatlin pretends to be different Arctic animals. For example, he can waddle like a penguin, crawl like a seal, or shuffle like a polar bear. This will help him learn about how these animals move!

  • Story Time: Read a short story about Arctic animals together. Discuss what makes each animal special and what they eat, where they live, and how they stay warm in the cold.

  • Arctic Animal Facts: Create a simple fact sheet about one Arctic animal. Gatlin can write or draw one interesting fact about the animal he chose, like what it eats or how it stays warm.

Talking Points

  • Polar Bears: "Did you know that polar bears have thick fur and a layer of fat to keep them warm? They love to swim in the icy water!"
  • Seals: "Seals can hold their breath underwater for a long time! They dive to catch fish and can be very playful!"
  • Penguins: "Penguins can't fly, but they are excellent swimmers! They slide on their bellies on the ice!"
  • Arctic Foxes: "Arctic foxes have fluffy tails and white fur in the winter to blend in with the snow. They are very clever!"
  • Habitat: "Arctic animals live in a very cold place called the Arctic. It has lots of snow and ice, and these animals are adapted to survive there!"
