Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will understand basic concepts of mapping in space, including how to create a simple map of the solar system and identify the planets and their order from the sun.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or colored markers
- Ruler
- Knowledge of the planets in our solar system
Activities
-
Solar System Scale Drawing
RR will create a scaled drawing of the solar system on paper. Using the ruler, RR can measure distances between planets and draw them in order from the sun, making sure to represent the size differences.
-
Planet Fact Cards
RR will create fact cards for each planet. On each card, RR will write the planet's name, a fun fact, and draw a small picture of it. This will help RR learn more about each planet while practicing writing and drawing skills.
-
Mapping the Stars
RR will draw a map of the night sky, marking where different constellations are located. This will help RR understand how to navigate using stars, similar to how ancient explorers did.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that the solar system is like a big neighborhood? The sun is the center, and the planets are like houses around it!"
- "Each planet is different! Can you name the planets in order from the sun? Let's see if we can remember them together!"
- "When we draw our solar system, we need to think about how far apart the planets really are. It’s not just about how big they are!"
- "What do you think is the coolest planet? Let’s find out a fun fact about it for our cards!"
- "Stars can help us find our way, just like a map! Have you ever looked up at the stars and tried to find a constellation?"
- "Using a ruler helps us make our drawings neat and helps us understand distances better. It’s like being an architect of the universe!"
- "Every time we look up at the night sky, we are looking at a map of the universe! Isn’t that amazing?"
- "Remember, maps can be fun and creative! There’s no wrong way to express what you see in space!"
