Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will create a cute penguin using black construction paper and cotton balls. This activity will help develop fine motor skills and enhance creativity while learning about penguins.
Materials and Prep
- Black construction paper
- Cotton balls
Before starting the lesson, make sure the workspace is clear and that the student has enough room to create their penguin. It might be helpful to have a picture of a penguin for reference!
Activities
- Penguin Shape Cutting:
Help the student cut out a penguin shape from the black construction paper. This can be a simple oval for the body and a smaller circle for the head. Encourage them to use safe scissors and assist as needed.
- Cotton Ball Fun:
Once the penguin shape is cut out, let the student glue cotton balls onto the penguin to create a fluffy texture. They can use the cotton balls for the belly and head to make it look cute!
- Penguin Story Time:
Read a short story or share fun facts about penguins. This can include where they live, what they eat, and why they are special. Ask questions to keep the student engaged!
Talking Points
- "Do you know where penguins live? They like to stay very cold, like in Antarctica!"
- "Penguins are birds, but they can't fly. Instead, they are great swimmers!"
- "What colors do you see on our penguin? Look at the black and the fluffy white cotton!"
- "Can you make your penguin look happy? Maybe give it a big smile with some cotton balls!"
