Objective

By the end of this lesson, River will have crafted an engaging and imaginative story about spending 24 hours aboard the Sea Shepherd ship Allankay docked in Brisbane. This will enhance River's creative writing skills and ability to express thoughts and emotions through storytelling.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or writing paper
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to a quiet space for writing
  • Basic knowledge about the Sea Shepherd organization and the Allankay ship

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session:

Begin the lesson with a brainstorming session where River can jot down ideas about what activities could take place on the ship, who might be aboard, and what challenges or adventures could arise during the 24 hours. Encourage River to think about the sights, sounds, and feelings experienced on the ship.

  • Character Development:

Have River create characters that might be on the ship, such as crew members, fellow volunteers, or even animals. Discuss their backgrounds, motivations, and how they contribute to the story. This will help in creating a richer narrative.

  • Story Outline:

Guide River in outlining the story structure. Discuss the beginning, middle, and end of the story, and how to build tension or excitement. This could involve River mapping out key events that happen during the 24 hours aboard the ship.

  • Writing Time:

Set aside dedicated writing time where River can start drafting the story. Encourage River to focus on descriptive language and sensory details to bring the story to life.

  • Sharing and Feedback:

Once the draft is complete, have a sharing session where River can read the story aloud. Provide constructive feedback and discuss what elements work well and what could be improved. This will enhance River's editing and revising skills.
