Objective
By the end of this lesson, Matilda will understand how to start seeds indoors, learn about the life cycle of plants, and gain hands-on experience in planting and caring for seeds until they sprout.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type you have available, like beans or flower seeds)
- Small containers (like cups or egg cartons)
- Soil (potting soil or any kind of dirt)
- Water
- Labels (can be made from paper or any other material)
Make sure to gather all the materials before starting the lesson. You can also research what plants grow well indoors for fun!
Activities
-
Seed Exploration:
Matilda will look at the seeds and learn about their shapes and sizes. She can compare different types of seeds and guess what plants they will grow into!
-
Planting Seeds:
Matilda will fill her containers with soil, plant the seeds, and water them. She can pretend to be a gardener and talk to the seeds as she plants them!
-
Creating Labels:
Matilda will make labels for her containers to remember what seeds she planted. She can decorate the labels with drawings or stickers!
-
Observation Journal:
Matilda will create a journal where she can draw pictures and write notes about her seeds as they grow. She can check on them every day!
Talking Points
- "Did you know that seeds are like tiny little packages of life? Each one has everything it needs to grow into a plant!"
- "When we plant seeds, we are helping them start their journey to become big and strong plants!"
- "Plants need three main things to grow: soil, water, and sunlight. Can you guess which one is the most important?"
- "As we take care of our seeds, we will be like plant doctors! We have to check on them and make sure they are happy!"
- "What do you think will happen if we forget to water our seeds? Let's make sure we give them enough love!"
- "When our seeds sprout, they will start to grow leaves. This is the plant saying, 'Hello, I’m alive!'"
- "Every plant has a life cycle. It starts from a seed, grows into a plant, and then makes new seeds. Isn't that amazing?"
