Objective

By the end of this lesson, Roxanne will have a foundational understanding of mycology, including the different types of fungi, their ecological roles, and some fun facts about mushrooms. She will also learn to identify common mushrooms and understand their importance in nature.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Field guide to mushrooms (if available) or printouts of common mushrooms
  • Outdoor space for a mushroom hunt (backyard, local park, etc.)
  • Camera or smartphone for taking pictures of mushrooms found

Before the lesson, ensure that Roxanne has a safe outdoor area to explore and familiarize yourself with local mushroom species to guide her during the hunt.

Activities

  1. Mushroom Hunt: Take Roxanne outside to look for mushrooms in your local area. Encourage her to observe different shapes, sizes, and colors. She can take pictures of any mushrooms she finds and note their locations.

  2. Mushroom Identification: Using a field guide or printouts, help Roxanne identify the mushrooms she found during the hunt. Discuss the characteristics that differentiate edible mushrooms from poisonous ones.

  3. Mycology Research Project: Have Roxanne choose a specific type of mushroom or fungus to research further. She can create a small presentation or poster to share her findings, including habitat, uses, and interesting facts.

  4. Fungi Art Project: Using the pictures taken during the mushroom hunt, Roxanne can create a collage or drawing of her favorite mushrooms. Encourage her to be creative and use her imagination!

Talking Points

  • "Fungi are not plants; they belong to their own kingdom! They play a crucial role in our ecosystem by decomposing organic matter."
  • "Did you know that some fungi can communicate with trees? They form networks underground that help trees share nutrients."
  • "Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi, similar to how apples are the fruit of an apple tree."
  • "While many mushrooms are edible, some can be very poisonous, so it’s important to learn how to identify them correctly."
  • "Fungi can be found in a variety of habitats, from forests to grasslands to even your backyard!"
