Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will enhance their literacy skills through fun and interactive gameplay with Literacy Jenga. They will improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills while enjoying a competitive and engaging activity.
Materials and Prep
- One set of Jenga blocks (or any stackable blocks).
- Markers or pens.
- Index cards or small pieces of paper.
Before the lesson, prepare the Jenga blocks by writing different literacy-related questions, vocabulary words, or prompts on each block or index card. Make sure the questions are age-appropriate and cover various topics in literacy.
Activities
- Literacy Jenga Game:
Set up the Jenga tower and take turns removing a block. When a block is removed, the player must answer the question or complete the prompt on the block before placing it on top. This encourages reading, comprehension, and quick thinking!
- Vocabulary Challenge:
After playing a few rounds, select five vocabulary words from the blocks. The student will then create sentences using each word, enhancing their understanding and usage of new vocabulary.
- Story Building:
Using the prompts or questions from the blocks, the student can create a short story. Each block pulled can add a new element to the story, making it a fun and creative writing exercise.
