By the end of this lesson, the student will improve their finger dexterity through fun activities using play dough and potato head pieces. They will learn how to manipulate materials to create shapes and figures, enhancing their fine motor skills while enjoying creative play.
Materials and Prep
- Play dough (any color)
- Potato head pieces (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc.)
- A clean, flat surface for play
- Optional: A timer for timed activities
Before starting the lesson, ensure that the play dough is soft and ready to use. Set up a clean workspace where the student can comfortably sit and play.
Activities

Play Dough Shapes
The student will roll, pinch, and flatten the play dough to create different shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. This activity encourages them to use their fingers in various ways.
-
Potato Head Creations
Using the potato head pieces, the student can create funny faces or characters by pushing the pieces into the play dough. This helps them practice precision and control with their fingers.
-
Play Dough Patterns
The student will create patterns with different colors of play dough. For example, they can alternate colors to make a rainbow. This activity enhances their dexterity while also introducing basic pattern recognition.
-
Mini Sculptures
The student will sculpt a mini figure or animal using the play dough and potato head pieces. This encourages imagination and fine motor skills as they shape and assemble their creations.
