Objective
By the end of this lesson, Suzanne will have a foundational understanding of veterinary office record keeping, be familiar with various veterinary equipment, and learn how to perform a basic physical examination on her pet. This hands-on experience will help her appreciate the responsibilities and skills required in veterinary care.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or digital device for record keeping
- Pens or pencils
- Access to a pet (dog, cat, or horse)
- Basic veterinary equipment (if available): thermometer, stethoscope, scale, and grooming tools
- Printouts of sample veterinary record forms (client and patient records)
- Online resources or books about veterinary practices
Before starting, ensure that the pet is comfortable and calm. Review the basic anatomy of the chosen pet to help with the physical examination.
Activities
- Record Keeping Practice:
Using the sample veterinary record forms, Suzanne will fill out a mock client and patient record for her pet. This will include details like the pet's name, age, medical history, and vaccination status. This activity will help her understand how important accurate record keeping is in a veterinary office.
- Veterinary Equipment Exploration:
Suzanne will explore any available veterinary equipment, discussing its purpose and how it's used. If possible, she can practice using a thermometer and stethoscope on her pet. This will give her hands-on experience and build her confidence in handling veterinary tools.
- Physical Examination Role-Play:
With her pet, Suzanne will perform a basic physical examination. She will check her pet’s temperature, listen to its heart, and observe its overall condition. This activity will reinforce her learning and give her practical skills in assessing pet health.
