Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand USDA zones and climates, and how this information helps us plan a successful spring garden. They will learn to identify their own USDA zone and choose plants that will thrive in their local environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (if available)
  • Printable USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (can be found online)
  • List of common garden plants and their growing requirements
  • Sunlight and temperature data for the local area

Before the lesson, ensure that you know your local USDA zone and have access to the necessary resources for research.

Activities

  • USDA Zone Exploration:

Start by looking up the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Find your zone and discuss what it means. Why is it important for gardening? Write down some key characteristics of your zone.

  • Climate Comparison:

Research how different climates affect plant growth. Create a simple chart comparing your zone to another zone. What plants grow well in each zone? Discuss why certain plants can’t grow in your zone.

  • Garden Planning:

Using the knowledge gained, plan a small spring garden. Choose at least five plants that are suitable for your zone. Draw a layout of your garden and explain why you chose those plants.
