Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of fossils, dinosaurs, and the role of paleontologists in uncovering the history of our planet. They will also explore the concept of creation as described in Genesis, connecting science and history in a fun and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or crayons
  • A small container of sand or dirt (for excavation simulation)
  • Plastic dinosaur toys (if available)
  • Books or printed materials about dinosaurs and fossils (if available)
  • Knowledge of basic dinosaur names and characteristics

Activities

  1. Dinosaur Drawing:

The student will draw their favorite dinosaur and label its parts (like head, tail, legs). This will help them learn about dinosaur anatomy and encourage creativity.

  2. Excavation Simulation:

Using the container of sand or dirt, the student will pretend to be a paleontologist by digging for “fossils” (small rocks or toy dinosaurs). They can use their hands or a small tool (like a spoon) to carefully excavate.

  3. Fossil Formation Activity:

The student will create their own “fossils” by pressing small objects (like leaves or toys) into playdough or clay. Afterward, they can discuss how real fossils are formed over time.

  4. Story Time - Genesis and Creation:

Read a simple version of the creation story from Genesis. Discuss how the world was created and how dinosaurs fit into that story, encouraging the student to think about the relationship between science and faith.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a paleontologist does?"
  • "Did you know that fossils are like nature’s time capsules? They tell us what life was like a long time ago!"
  • "Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. Can you name your favorite dinosaur and what makes it special?"
  • "Fossils can be made from plants and animals. What do you think happens to them over time?"
  • "In Genesis, we learn about how everything was created. How do you think that connects to the dinosaurs?"
  • "If you could discover any dinosaur fossil, which one would you want to find?"
  • "Remember, being curious and asking questions is what scientists do! What questions do you have about dinosaurs or fossils?"
