Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create an engaging short story using their imagination, develop their writing skills, and learn how to present their story creatively using the materials provided.

Materials and Prep

  • Writing papers (blank or lined)
  • Pencils for writing and drawing
  • Scissors
  • Stapler and staples

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a comfortable workspace and all materials are within reach. Discuss the importance of storytelling and encourage the student to think about their favorite stories or characters for inspiration.

Activities

  • Story Brainstorming: Begin with a brainstorming session where the student can jot down ideas for their short story. Encourage them to think about characters, settings, and plots. They can draw pictures of their ideas using the pencils.

  • Writing the First Draft: Have the student choose their favorite idea and start writing the first draft of their short story on the writing paper. Remind them to focus on getting their ideas down without worrying about spelling or grammar at this stage.

  • Illustrating the Story: Once the draft is complete, encourage the student to illustrate key scenes or characters from their story using the pencils. They can cut out these illustrations with scissors to add a creative touch.

  • Creating a Storybook: After the illustrations are ready, guide the student to compile their story and illustrations together. They can use a stapler to bind the pages into a mini-storybook, making it a special keepsake.

Talking Points

  • "What is your favorite story, and what makes it special to you?"
  • "Think about the characters: Who are they, and what do they want?"
  • "What challenges do your characters face, and how do they overcome them?"
  • "How can we make your story visually exciting with illustrations?"
  • "Remember, every great story has a beginning, middle, and end. Can you outline yours?"
  • "Don't worry about making it perfect; just let your imagination flow!"
