Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a short story using their imagination, illustrate it with drawings, and compile it into a mini-book using scissors, a stapler, and staples.

Materials and Prep

  • Writing paper (copied for the student to use)
  • Pencils for writing and drawing
  • Scissors for cutting paper
  • Stapler and staples to bind the mini-book

Before the lesson, ensure that the student knows how to use scissors safely and is familiar with how to use a stapler. Prepare a comfortable writing space with good lighting.

Activities

  • Story Brainstorming:

    Start by discussing different ideas for stories. Ask the student questions like, "What is your favorite animal?" or "What adventure would you like to go on?" Write down their ideas to help them choose a story topic.

  • Writing the Story:

    Once they have chosen a topic, guide them in writing their short story. Encourage them to use simple sentences and to express their thoughts freely. Remind them that there are no wrong answers in storytelling!

  • Drawing Illustrations:

    After writing, let the student illustrate their story. They can draw pictures that match their story or create fun characters. Encourage creativity and remind them to use their pencils for both writing and drawing.

  • Creating the Mini-Book:

    Help the student cut their drawings and story into pages, then guide them on how to staple the pages together to make a mini-book. They can decorate the cover with a title and their name!
