Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the expectations for behavior and participation in a music classroom, as well as appreciate the importance of respect, teamwork, and creativity in musical activities.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pencil for notes
- Access to a music playlist (optional for discussion)
- Space to move around for activities
- Basic understanding of musical terms (like rhythm, melody, harmony)
Activities
- Classroom Expectations Brainstorm
The student will brainstorm a list of expectations for a music classroom. This could include respect for instruments, listening while others play, and being open to trying new things. After brainstorming, discuss why each expectation is important.
- Role-Playing Scenarios
The student will engage in role-playing different scenarios that might happen in a music class, such as how to respond to a classmate who is being disruptive or how to support a friend who is nervous about performing. This helps develop empathy and communication skills.
- Music Listening Session
Listen to a few different pieces of music together and discuss what makes each piece unique. The student can note down their thoughts on how the music makes them feel and what elements they notice, promoting active listening and critical thinking.
- Creative Expression Activity
Have the student create a short piece of music or lyrics that reflect their feelings about the expectations discussed. This encourages them to express themselves creatively while reinforcing the lesson's themes.
