Objective

By the end of this lesson, BenOllie will understand the practical applications of functional maths in real-life scenarios, including budgeting, measuring, and problem-solving. He will be able to apply these concepts to everyday situations, enhancing his confidence and skills in maths.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for notes and calculations
  • A calculator (if necessary)
  • A ruler or measuring tape for measuring activities
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Activities

  • Budgeting Game:

BenOllie will create a simple budget for a hypothetical event, like a birthday party. He'll list potential expenses (food, decorations, entertainment) and total them up to see if they fit within a set budget. This will help him understand the importance of managing money.

  • Measurement Challenge:

Using a ruler or measuring tape, BenOllie will measure different objects around the house (like a table, a book, or a room). He'll record the measurements and then calculate the total length of all the objects combined. This activity will reinforce measurement skills and addition.

  • Shopping Spree Simulation:

BenOllie will create a shopping list of items he would like to buy, assigning each item a price. He'll then simulate a shopping spree, keeping track of his spending and ensuring he stays within a budget. This will teach him about addition, subtraction, and managing finances.

  • Problem-Solving Scenarios:

BenOllie will be presented with various real-life scenarios (like calculating how much paint is needed to cover a wall or how many pizzas to order for a party). He'll work through the problems step-by-step, applying functional maths skills to find solutions.
