Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the story of Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter, including its themes of family, fun, and the importance of being oneself. The student will also engage in creative activities that enhance their artistic and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper for drawing and writing
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Storybook "The Tale of Tom Kitten" by Beatrix Potter (if available)
  • Space for outdoor play or a garden
  • Optional: A small basket or bag for gathering items during the outdoor activity

Before the lesson, ensure you have a quiet reading area and a comfortable space for art activities. Familiarize yourself with the story of Tom Kitten to guide the discussion.

Activities

  • Story Time:

Read "The Tale of Tom Kitten" together. Encourage the student to ask questions about the story and the characters as you read.

  • Character Drawing:

After reading, ask the student to draw their favorite character from the story. Discuss what makes that character special and what they would like to do if they were that character.

  • Outdoor Adventure:

Go outside and pretend to be Tom Kitten and his friends. Look for items in nature that could be used as "clothes" for the kittens. Collect leaves, flowers, or small twigs.

  • Creative Writing:

Have the student create a short story about what Tom Kitten might do next after the events of the book. Encourage them to think about new adventures and write or dictate their story.

  • Musical Movement:

Play some gentle music and have the student dance like a kitten. They can pretend to stretch, play, and explore, just like Tom Kitten and his siblings!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes Tom Kitten special?"
  • "Can you tell me about a time you had fun like Tom Kitten?"
  • "Why do you think the kittens got into trouble? What would you do differently?"
  • "What do you think is the most important lesson from the story?"
  • "If you could be any character from the book, who would you choose and why?"
  • "How does it feel to pretend to be Tom Kitten? What adventures would you go on?"
