Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name family members in both English and Spanish, understand the concept of family structures, and create a visual representation of their family using art materials.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Worksheet with circles for drawing
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Prepared bilingual instructions (English and Spanish)

Before the lesson, make sure to explain the importance of family in our lives and prepare a few examples of family structures to discuss.

Activities

  • Drawing Family Members: The student will draw each family member in the circles provided on the worksheet. Encourage them to use different colors for each person.

  • Cutting and Pasting: After drawing, the student will carefully cut out each circle and paste them onto the construction paper strip, making a fun family banner.

  • Labeling: Once the circles are pasted, help the student label each member in both English and Spanish (e.g., "Mom - Mamá").

  • Family Discussion: Have a short discussion about each family member, asking questions like, "What does your mom do?" or "What do you like to do with your brother?"

  • Practice Phrases: Together, practice saying the names of family members in English and Spanish out loud to reinforce learning.

Talking Points

  • "Who lives in your house? Let's draw them!"
  • "In Spanish, we say 'mamá' for mom and 'papá' for dad. Can you say it?"
  • "Family is important because they love and help us!"
  • "What fun things do you do with your family?"
  • "Every family is different! Who is in your family?"
  • "Let's practice: 'This is my sister - Esta es mi hermana!'"
  • "Can you tell me what your pet's name is in English and Spanish?"
