Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the main characters, themes, and magical elements of the Harry Potter series, while engaging in creative activities that enhance their love for reading and storytelling.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Optional: A printed picture of Hogwarts or a Harry Potter character for inspiration
- Knowledge of the first book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," or willingness to discuss its main ideas
Activities
-
Create Your Own Wizard:
The student will design their own wizard or witch character. They can draw their character and write a short backstory, including their name, special powers, and favorite spells.
-
Magical Creature Hunt:
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find items that could represent magical creatures from the Harry Potter series. For example, a stuffed animal could represent a Hippogriff, or a shiny rock could represent a Dragon egg.
-
Spell Creation:
The student will invent their own magical spell! They should think of what the spell does, create a fun name for it, and write down the wand movement needed to cast it.
-
Story Time:
Read a chapter from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" together. Discuss the characters and events, and ask the student what they would do if they were in Harry's shoes.
