Objective

By the end of this lesson, Rebecca will have created an engaging learning experience that combines storytelling, sensory play, and creative expression, all centered around the themes of friendship and kindness as depicted in "The Lion and the Mouse." She will also develop her ability to facilitate learning activities for young children aged 3-5.

Materials and Prep

  • Handmade puppets representing the lion and the mouse
  • A sensory bin filled with jungle-themed items (e.g., leaves, toy animals, textured materials)
  • Paper and crayons for drawing
  • A comfortable space for storytelling and activities
  • Knowledge of the story "The Lion and the Mouse" and its moral lessons

Activities

  • Puppet Storytelling:

Rebecca will use the handmade puppets to narrate the story of "The Lion and the Mouse." She can encourage the children to participate by making sound effects or acting out parts of the story, fostering engagement and comprehension.

  • Sensory Exploration:

In this activity, children will explore the jungle-themed sensory bin. They can dig through the materials to find hidden toy animals or create their own jungle scenes using the items, enhancing their fine motor skills and imaginative play.

  • Creative Drawing:

After the story, Rebecca will encourage the children to draw their favorite scene or character from the story. This activity will help them express their understanding of the story and develop their artistic skills.

  • Discussion on Kindness:

Rebecca will lead a discussion about the moral of the story, asking questions like, "How did the mouse help the lion?" and "What does it mean to be kind?" This will help the children connect the story to real-life situations.

Talking Points

  • "The Lion and the Mouse teaches us that even the smallest creatures can make a big difference. Can you think of a time when you helped someone?"
  • "What do you think the lion learned from the mouse? How can we show kindness to others?"
  • "Exploring the sensory bin helps us understand the jungle environment. What animals do you see, and what sounds do they make?"
  • "Art is a great way to express our feelings about a story. What colors will you use to show your favorite part?"
  • "Remember, stories are not just for entertainment; they can teach us important lessons about friendship and helping others."
