Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of using preferred names and how it makes people feel respected and valued. The student will also practice using their own preferred name and the names of others in fun and engaging ways.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • A mirror
  • Sticky notes or small cards
  • Optional: A favorite stuffed animal or toy

Make sure to explain to the student that everyone has a name they like to be called. It’s important to listen and use those names to show we care about each other.

Activities

  • My Name Art:

The student will create a colorful art piece using their preferred name. They can write their name in big letters and decorate it with drawings that represent their personality or interests.

  • Name Game:

Play a fun game where the student says their preferred name and then a funny nickname they want to be called. This helps them express themselves and understand that names can be special and playful.

  • Mirror Time:

The student will stand in front of a mirror and say their preferred name out loud. This helps them feel confident and proud of their name. Encourage them to smile while they do it!

  • Sticky Note Names:

Write down the preferred names of family members or friends on sticky notes. The student can decorate the notes and then place them around the house, saying each name aloud as they do.

  • Stuffed Animal Introduction:

If using a stuffed animal or toy, the student can introduce their toy using its preferred name. They can pretend to have a conversation with the toy about names and why they are important.

Talking Points

  • "What do you like to be called? That’s your preferred name!"
  • "Using the name someone likes makes them feel happy and special!"
  • "Can you think of a fun nickname? It can be silly!"
  • "Let’s practice saying our names together. It’s fun to hear our names!"
