Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math concepts to solve problems related to Fortnite, and enhance their English skills through creative writing and vocabulary exercises inspired by the game.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing and math exercises
  • A timer (can use a phone or clock)
  • Access to Fortnite (for discussion and examples)
  • Knowledge of basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Familiarity with Fortnite characters, items, and gameplay mechanics

Activities

  • Fortnite Math Challenge:

Set up a series of math problems based on Fortnite scenarios. For example, "If you collect 5 wood from each tree and you chop down 4 trees, how much wood do you have?" This will engage the student in math while relating it to something they enjoy.

  • Character Profile Creation:

Have the student create a character profile for their favorite Fortnite character. They can write about the character's abilities, weapons, and backstory, using descriptive language to enhance their writing skills.

  • Fortnite Vocabulary Quiz:

Create a list of Fortnite-related terms (like "loot," "build," "squad," etc.) and have the student define them. This can be turned into a fun quiz or a matching game.

  • Build a Strategy:

Discuss different strategies for winning a game of Fortnite. Have the student calculate the probability of winning based on different strategies or scenarios, integrating math with gameplay tactics.
