Objective

By the end of this lesson, Benobo will have a deeper understanding of the intersection between art, music, and social studies through the lens of Tim Georgeson's work. He will explore how art can convey messages about environmental and cultural issues, and he will create a personal project that reflects his interpretation of these themes.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes and sketches
  • Access to online resources or documentaries about Tim Georgeson and William Barton
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, or paints) for the creative project
  • Audio recording device (smartphone or computer) for music or sound creation
  • Quiet space for reflection and creativity

Activities

  • Research and Reflection: Begin with a short research session on Tim Georgeson and William Barton. Watch clips of their work and take notes on key themes such as environmental justice and cultural storytelling. Reflect on how their work makes you feel and what messages resonate with you.

  • Soundscape Creation: Using your audio recording device, create a short soundscape that reflects an environment you feel connected to. This could be a natural setting, a city, or even a personal space. Incorporate sounds that evoke emotions or memories related to that environment.

  • Artistic Expression: Create a piece of art (drawing, painting, or collage) that represents your thoughts on the intersection of art and climate justice. Use the insights gained from your research to inform your creative choices. Consider how colors, shapes, and imagery can convey your message.

  • Presentation: Prepare a short presentation (3-5 minutes) where you share your soundscape and artwork. Explain the inspiration behind your creations and how they relate to the themes explored in Georgeson's and Barton's work.
