Objective
By the end of this lesson, Hope will be able to use her imagination and creativity to build various structures with Legos, while also developing her fine motor skills and understanding basic shapes and colors.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted Lego blocks of different shapes, sizes, and colors
- A flat surface to build on, such as a table or a play mat
- Optional: A timer or a music playlist for timed challenges
Before starting the lesson, make sure that all the Lego pieces are clean and sorted if necessary. Create a comfortable building space where Hope can freely explore her creativity.
Activities
- Color Sorting Challenge:
Start by having Hope sort the Lego blocks by color. This will help her recognize and name different colors while organizing her building materials.
- Shape Building:
Encourage Hope to build different shapes using her Legos. For example, she can create squares, triangles, and rectangles. Ask her to name the shapes as she builds them!
- Free Build Time:
Give Hope a set amount of time (like 15 minutes) to build whatever she wants. This encourages her creativity and allows her to express herself through her designs.
- Story Building:
Ask Hope to build a scene from her favorite story or create a new one. She can use her Lego creations to act out the story, which will enhance her storytelling skills.
Talking Points
- "What colors do you see in your Lego collection? Can you find something red?"
- "Can you show me how to make a triangle with your Legos? What other shapes can we make?"
- "How tall do you think your building can get? Let's see if it can stand on its own!"
- "What story do you want to tell with your Lego creations? Let's build it together!"
- "Why do you think it’s important to use different shapes when building? What happens if we only use squares?"
- "How do you feel when you're building? Is it fun to create something new?"
