Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will have a better understanding of healthy food choices, the importance of nutrition, and how to prepare a simple healthy meal. She will also learn about the food groups and how to incorporate a variety of foods into her diet.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A list of different food items (fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy)
  • Access to a kitchen for cooking (if applicable)
  • Basic cooking tools (knife, cutting board, pots, etc.)

Before the lesson, ensure that the kitchen is safe and equipped for cooking. Familiarize yourself with basic cooking techniques if you plan to prepare a meal together.

Activities

  • Food Group Sorting:

Nadia will categorize a list of food items into their respective food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. This will help her understand the variety of foods available and their nutritional benefits.

  • Healthy Meal Planning:

Together, Nadia will create a simple meal plan using foods from each food group. She can choose her favorite foods to include, which will make the planning process more enjoyable and personal.

  • Cooking Together:

If possible, Nadia will prepare a healthy recipe using the ingredients from her meal plan. This hands-on activity will teach her basic cooking skills and the importance of using fresh ingredients.

  • Food Art:

Nadia can create a colorful poster or drawing of her favorite healthy foods. This activity will encourage her creativity while reinforcing her knowledge of nutritious options.
