Objective
By the end of this lesson, I will have created my own unique character designs, learned how to draw them with basic shapes, and used colors to bring them to life. I will also understand how to express different emotions and personalities through my characters.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any type will do!)
- Pencils for sketching
- Colored pencils or crayons for coloring
- Optional: Eraser for corrections
Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a clean workspace where you can comfortably draw and color. Think about the types of characters you want to create—are they heroes, animals, or maybe something from your imagination?
Activities
-
Character Brainstorming: Start by writing down different character ideas. Think about their personality, what they look like, and what makes them special. You can draw small sketches next to your ideas!
-
Basic Shapes Drawing: Use basic shapes like circles, squares, and triangles to outline your character. This will help you build a solid structure before adding details.
-
Adding Details: Once you have your basic shapes, start adding features like eyes, hair, and clothing. Think about how these details reflect your character's personality.
-
Coloring Time: Choose colors that match your character's personality. For example, bright colors for a cheerful character or darker tones for a mysterious one. Have fun experimenting!
-
Character Story Creation: Write a short story or a few sentences about your character. What adventures do they go on? What challenges do they face? This will help you think deeper about your creation!
Talking Points
- "Think about what makes your character unique. What do they like to do? What are their strengths?"
- "Using shapes is a great way to start drawing. Can you see how a circle can become a head?"
- "Details are important! How can you make your character's eyes show their emotions?"
- "Colors can tell a story too! What colors will show your character's feelings?"
- "Every character has a story. What adventures will your character go on? Let's imagine together!"
