Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of gardening, including how to plant seeds, what plants need to grow, and the importance of plants in our environment. The student will also practice counting and learn new words related to gardening.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type like beans or flowers)
- Soil (if possible, use a container with soil)
- Water
- Small containers or a garden bed (if available)
- A sunny spot for planting
- Paper and crayons for drawing
Before starting, make sure to choose a sunny spot for planting, and gather all materials. It’s helpful to know the names of a few plants and what they need to grow.
Activities
- Seed Planting:
Start by planting seeds in the soil. Show the student how to make small holes for the seeds and cover them with soil. Talk about how deep to plant them.
- Watering the Garden:
Teach the student how to water the seeds gently. Explain why plants need water to grow and how much is just right.
- Drawing Plants:
After planting, have the student draw what they think their plants will look like when they grow. Encourage creativity and use of colors!
- Daily Garden Check:
Set up a routine to check on the garden every day. The student can observe changes and learn to be patient as they wait for their plants to grow.
Talking Points
- "What do you think plants need to grow?"
- "Can you tell me some things we can do to help our plants?"
- "Why do you think plants are important for us?"
- "How do you feel when you see a flower or a tree?"
- "What do you think will happen to our seeds if we take care of them?"
- "Let’s count how many seeds we planted today!"
