Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will create their own beautiful mosaic garden stone using simple art techniques. They will learn about colors, patterns, and how to express their creativity through art!

Materials and Prep

  • Flat stone or tile (smooth and clean)
  • Colored glass pieces, broken tiles, or plastic beads
  • Adhesive (like glue or a strong craft adhesive)
  • Grout (optional, depending on the finish desired)
  • Protective gloves (if using grout)
  • Pencil or chalk (for sketching designs)
  • Sealant (to protect the finished stone)

Before starting, make sure to have a clean workspace and gather all materials. Discuss with the student what kind of design they would like to create on their garden stone.

Activities

  • Design Planning:

Have the student sketch out their design on paper first. Encourage them to think about shapes, colors, and patterns they want to use. This helps them visualize their mosaic before starting!

  • Creating the Mosaic:

Once the design is ready, the student can start placing the colored pieces on the stone. They can use glue to stick them down and should be encouraged to fill the whole space with their chosen colors and patterns.

  • Applying Grout (Optional):

If using grout, show the student how to apply it over the mosaic once the glue is dry. This will help fill in the gaps and give a finished look to their stone. Make sure to wear gloves during this step!

  • Sealing the Stone:

After the mosaic is complete and dry, the student can apply a sealant to protect their artwork from the weather. Discuss how this helps their art last longer in the garden.

Talking Points

  • "What colors do you want to use for your garden stone? Colors can help express how we feel!"
  • "A mosaic is made up of many little pieces. What shapes can you think of to use in your design?"
  • "Why do you think we use glue? It helps hold our pieces together so they don't fall off!"
  • "If we use grout, it fills in the gaps. What do you think that will look like?"
  • "How do you think sealing the stone will help it? It keeps our art safe from rain and sun!"
  • "What will you do with your garden stone when it's finished? Can you think of a special place to put it?"
  • "Art is all about having fun! What do you like most about creating your mosaic?"
