Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will create a beautiful mosaic garden stepping stone using a stepping stone kit. They will learn about the art of mosaics, express their creativity, and gain a sense of accomplishment by making something unique for their garden.

Materials and Prep

  • Stepping stone kit (includes concrete mix, mold, and mosaic pieces)
  • Water (for mixing with concrete)
  • Mixing container (to mix the concrete)
  • Stirring stick or tool (for mixing)
  • Protective gloves (to keep hands clean)
  • Old newspaper or plastic sheet (to protect the work surface)
  • Safety goggles (to protect eyes while working)

Before starting, make sure to read the instructions on the stepping stone kit carefully. Lay out the materials and prepare the workspace for a fun and creative experience!

Activities

  • Mixing the Concrete:

Start by measuring the right amount of water and concrete mix in the mixing container. Use the stirring stick to mix them until you have a smooth, thick consistency. This is the base for your stepping stone!

  • Creating the Mosaic Design:

Once the concrete is mixed, pour it into the mold. Then, use the mosaic pieces to create a fun design on top. You can make patterns, shapes, or even spell out your name! Let your imagination run wild!

  • Decorating and Personalizing:

After placing the mosaic pieces, you can add more personal touches. Think about colors that you love or symbols that represent your favorite things. This is your stepping stone, so make it special!

  • Waiting and Unmolding:

After you finish your design, let the concrete set according to the kit instructions. Once it's ready, carefully remove your stepping stone from the mold. This is the exciting part where you see your creation come to life!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that mosaics have been around for thousands of years? They were used in ancient buildings!"
  • "What colors do you want to use in your design? Think about what makes you happy!"
  • "Creating art is all about expressing yourself. There are no wrong choices in art!"
  • "Mosaics can tell stories! What story do you want your stepping stone to tell?"
  • "Concrete is a strong material. Once it dries, your stepping stone will last a long time!"
  • "How do you feel about your creation? Every artist feels proud of their work!"
  • "You can place your stepping stone in the garden or even give it as a gift. What a special surprise!"
