Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how different Earth changes occur over short and long periods of time. They will learn about events like tornadoes, earthquakes, and erosion, and how these changes affect our planet.
Materials and Prep
- Access to the internet or a device to watch videos about Earth changes.
- Notebook and pencil for taking notes and drawing.
- Time to discuss and reflect on the videos and activities.
Before the lesson, make sure to find some fun and educational videos about tornadoes, earthquakes, and erosion that are suitable for kids. Prepare some questions to discuss after watching the videos.
Activities
- Watch and Learn: Find a video on tornadoes, earthquakes, or erosion. After watching, write down three things you learned.
- Draw It Out: After learning about an Earth event, draw a picture of it. For example, if you learned about a volcano, draw the volcano erupting!
- Make a Timeline: Create a simple timeline showing how long it takes for erosion to change a rock or how quickly a tornado can happen. Use your drawings to illustrate your timeline!
- Talk About It: Share what you learned with a family member or friend. Explain why these Earth changes are important and what they can do to help the Earth.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that tornadoes can spin really fast and cause a lot of damage? They can happen in just a few minutes!"
- "Earthquakes happen when the ground shakes. Sometimes they can be very strong and change the land!"
- "Erosion is when wind and water slowly wear away rocks and dirt. It can take a really long time!"
- "Volcanoes can explode and create new land! They are powerful forces of nature!"
- "It’s important to learn about these events so we can be safe and understand our Earth better!"
- "Every time we see changes in the Earth, it helps scientists learn more about how our planet works!"
- "What do you think we can do to help protect our Earth from these changes?"
