The Code of Awesome: Level Up Your Character!

Hey there! Ever wonder what makes someone trustworthy, respected, or just plain awesome? A lot of it comes down to three cool concepts: Accountability, Morals, and Principles. Think of them as your personal 'Code of Awesome' - the rules you live by to be your best self!

What's the Buzz? Defining Our Terms

  • Accountability: This is like owning your gameplay. It means taking responsibility for YOUR actions and choices, whether you won the game or totally messed up. No blaming the controller (or your little sister!). It's about saying 'Yep, I did that,' learning from it, and trying to make things right if needed.
  • Morals: These are your inner feelings about what's right and wrong. It's that little voice telling you if something feels fair, kind, honest, or maybe a bit shady. Think: Is it right to share your snacks? Is it wrong to sneak extra screen time? That's your morals talking!
  • Principles: These are the fundamental rules or beliefs YOU decide are super important for guiding your life. They are like the main laws in your 'Code of Awesome'. Examples could be: 'Always be honest,' 'Treat others with respect,' 'Work hard for what you want,' or 'Be fair.' Principles help you make tough decisions.

Why Bother? The Importance Scoreboard!

Living by a 'Code of Awesome' has huge perks:

  • Trust Points +++: People trust you more when you are accountable and act morally.
  • Friendship Boost: Good principles help build strong, healthy friendships.
  • Self-Respect Level Up: You feel better about yourself when you know you're trying to do the right thing.
  • Decision-Making Skill Unlocked: Principles make it easier to figure out what to do, especially when things get tricky.
  • World Improvement Contributor: When people act with good morals and take accountability, the world becomes a better place!

Activity Zone: Scenario Smackdown!

Let's explore some situations. Read each one and think about/discuss:

  1. What is the main issue here (accountability, morals, principles)?
  2. What's the 'Code of Awesome' move? What's the 'Level Down' move?
  3. What might happen depending on the choice made?
  • Scenario 1: You and a friend were tossing a ball inside and accidentally broke a lamp. Your friend immediately points at you when your parent walks in. What do you do?
  • Scenario 2: You find a $20 bill on the floor in a quiet store aisle. Nobody is around. What do you do?
  • Scenario 3: You promised your parent you would finish your chores before playing video games. Your friends text you to hop online *right now* for a special game event. Your chores aren't done. What do you do?
  • Scenario 4: You see someone at school being made fun of by a group. You don't know the person being teased very well, and the group is kind of intimidating. What principles might help you decide what to do?

Activity Zone 2: Forge Your Code!

Time to think about YOUR personal 'Code of Awesome'. What principles are important to YOU? Grab paper and a pen!

  1. Brainstorm: Write down words or ideas that you think are important for being a good person (e.g., Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Fairness, Responsibility, Courage, Perseverance).
  2. Choose Your Core: Pick 3-5 that feel the MOST important to you right now.
  3. Define Your Way: Write a short sentence for each chosen principle explaining what it means TO YOU. For example: 'Honesty: I will tell the truth, even when it's hard.' or 'Respect: I will treat others and their things how I want to be treated.'
  4. Keep it Visible: Maybe write your code down neatly and keep it somewhere you can see it as a reminder!

Wrap-up Chat

Let's talk:

  • Which scenario was the hardest to figure out? Why?
  • Is it always easy to be accountable or follow your morals/principles? Why or why not?
  • How does it feel when you (or someone you know) takes responsibility for a mistake?
  • How does it feel when you stick to a principle you believe in?
  • Remember, building your 'Code of Awesome' is a lifelong quest. You'll learn and grow. The important thing is to THINK about your choices and TRY your best!
