Let's Find Australia!
First, let's find Australia on our map or globe. Look! It's a big island all by itself way down here! Lots of special animals live only in Australia.
Meeting the Animals!
1. Kangaroo
Look at this amazing animal! It's a Kangaroo. Kangaroos have big, strong legs for hopping! Can you hop like a kangaroo? Boing, boing, boing! Mommy kangaroos have a special pouch on their tummy to carry their baby, called a joey. Let's pretend to have a pouch!
2. Koala
Next, meet the cuddly Koala! Koalas love to climb trees and eat special leaves called eucalyptus leaves. They sleep a lot! Can you pretend to be a sleepy koala climbing a tree?
3. Emu
Wow, look at this big bird! It's an Emu. Emus are tall birds, but they can't fly. They can run very fast on their long legs! Let's stretch up tall like an emu and run in place!
4. Wombat
This furry friend is a Wombat. Wombats are strong little animals that love to dig burrows underground. Can you pretend to dig like a wombat?
5. Platypus
What a funny animal! This is a Platypus. It has a beak like a duck, a tail like a beaver, and webbed feet for swimming. Platypuses live near water. Can you make duck noises like a platypus's beak might look? Quack, quack!
Craft Time: Make a Koala Mask!
Let's make a simple Koala face!
- Cut a large circle from grey paper for the face.
- Cut two smaller grey circles for ears.
- Cut two even smaller white circles for the inside of the ears.
- Glue the white circles onto the grey ear circles.
- Glue the ears to the top of the big grey circle.
- Draw a big black nose in the middle and two small eyes above it with a black crayon or marker.
- (Optional: Cut out eye holes and attach string to make it a mask - adult help needed).
Wrap Up!
Wow! We met so many cool animals from Australia today! Can you name some of them? We learned about kangaroos that hop, koalas that climb, emus that run, wombats that dig, and platypuses that swim! Hooray for Aussie animals!
