My Amazing Castle Adventure!

Materials Needed: Picture book about castles, Building blocks (e.g., wooden, LEGO, cardboard boxes), Large paper or cardboard, Crayons, markers, or paint, Optional: Toilet paper tubes, small boxes, craft sticks, glue, tape.

Learning Fun Time!

Today, we're going on an exciting adventure to learn all about castles! Have you ever seen a picture of a big, strong castle? What do they look like?

Story Time: Castle Tales

Let's read a story about castles. (Read a simple picture book about castles, pointing out features like walls, towers, gates/doors.) What did we see in the book? Big walls? Tall towers? Why do you think people built castles long ago? (Guide discussion towards protection, keeping people safe, kings/queens living there.)

Exploring Castle Parts

Castles have special parts to keep them strong. Let's look at our pictures or book again:

  • Walls: Look how thick and strong they are! They go all around to keep everyone safe inside.
  • Towers: These parts are tall! People could stand in them to look out far away and see if anyone was coming.
  • Gate/Door (Gatehouse): This is how people get in and out. It was often very strong, maybe even with a heavy door that lifted up (drawbridge)!

Can you point to the walls, towers, and gate in the pictures?

Build Your Own Castle!

Now it's your turn to be a master castle builder! Using our blocks (or boxes and craft supplies), let's build our very own castle. Let's try to make sure it has strong walls, at least one tall tower, and a gate so people can go in!

(Allow ample time for building and imaginative play. Encourage creativity. Ask questions about their castle: Who lives inside your castle? Is it a friendly castle or one ready for defense? Where is the tallest tower?)

Castle Art (Optional Extension)

Would you like to draw the amazing castle you just built? Or maybe imagine a different one? Let's get some paper and crayons/markers and create a picture of your castle!

Wrap-up: Castle Check!

Wow, what fantastic castles we built today! You are wonderful builders. Can you tell me one thing you remember about castles? (e.g., They have walls, towers, they kept people safe, kings lived there.) Great job on your Castle Adventure!
