Hey Ella! Ready to mix your love for musicals with the amazing music of Taylor Swift? Today, we're going to imagine YOU are creating the next big Broadway hit using her songs. It's called a 'jukebox musical' when existing songs are used to tell a story. Let's brainstorm your very own!

Phase 1: The Big Idea (15 mins)

Every musical needs a story. What kind of story do you want to tell? Think about the big themes in Taylor's songs:

  • Falling in love (or out of it!)
  • Friendship (the good and the bad)
  • Growing up and figuring things out
  • Feeling like an underdog or misunderstood
  • Standing up for yourself
  • Dreams and ambitions

Activity: Grab your notebook! Let's brainstorm. What themes pop out to you? Jot down a few initial ideas for your musical's main story. What's the vibe? Happy? Sad? Romantic? Mysterious? A mix?

Phase 2: Starring... Who? (20 mins)

Now, who is this story about? Musicals need characters we can root for (or against!).

Activity: Let's create 2-3 main characters. Think about:

  • Who are they? (Name, age, basic personality)

  • What's stopping them? (Their conflict or obstacle)
  • How do they relate to each other? (Friends? Rivals? Family? Strangers?)

Think about characters who might sing songs like 'You Belong With Me' or 'Blank Space' or 'Mean'. Let Taylor's characters inspire you, or create totally new ones!

Phase 3: The Story Arc (20 mins)

Okay, we have characters and a basic idea. Let's map out the story journey. Most stories have:

  • Beginning: Introduce the characters, the setting, and the main problem or goal.
  • Middle: Things get complicated! Characters face challenges, make choices, and the story builds (this is often where things go wrong before they get better).
  • End: The climax! The biggest moment of tension or action, followed by the resolution where the story wraps up.

Activity: In your notebook, sketch out these three parts for YOUR musical idea. Just a few sentences for each is fine!

Phase 4: Name That Tune! (30 mins)

This is where the magic happens! We need to place Taylor Swift songs into your story outline. Where do they fit best? Think about the emotion or story point of each part:

  • Opening Number: Introduces the world/characters (Maybe 'Welcome To New York' if it's set there? Or 'ME!' for a character intro?)

Activity: Listen to snippets of different Taylor Swift songs (use a streaming service). For each part of your story outline (Beginning, Middle, End), pick at least ONE song you think would fit perfectly. Write down the song title and a short reason WHY it fits that moment.
