Forest Textures Adventure!
Let's go on an adventure to feel all the different textures nature has to offer!
Warm-up (5 minutes)
Talk about textures we know. "What does your fuzzy sweater feel like? Soft! What about the kitchen table? Smooth!" Ask: "What kinds of things do you think we can find outside? What might they feel like? Rough bark? Smooth stones? Soft moss?"
Texture Hunt (15-20 minutes)
Go outside (to a backyard, park, or actual forest area if accessible). Give the child the collection bag. "Our mission is to find things with interesting textures! Can you find something rough? Something smooth? Something bumpy? Something soft?" Help them gently touch different natural items like leaves, bark, twigs, stones, moss, pinecones, etc. Encourage them to describe the feeling as they place items (or small samples like a leaf or fallen bark piece) in their bag.
Texture Rubbing Art (15 minutes)
Come back inside or find a comfortable spot outdoors. Lay out the paper and crayons (peel the paper off a few). Show the child how to place a natural item (like a leaf or piece of bark) under the paper and rub the side of the crayon over it. "Look! The texture appears like magic!" Let the child experiment with different items they collected, creating a collage of nature's textures.
Wrap-up & Share (5 minutes)
Look at the rubbing collage together. "Tell me about the textures you found. Which one was the roughest? Which was the smoothest? Which texture is your favorite?" Praise their exploring and artistic skills.
