Introduction (5 minutes)
Ask the student: "Who are some people who help us in our town or neighborhood? Think about people who have special jobs that help everyone." Introduce the term "community helper" - people whose jobs help keep the community safe, healthy, and running smoothly. Explain that today we'll learn about some of these important people.
Activity 1: Brainstorming Helpers (10 minutes)
Let's brainstorm together! Grab a piece of paper and let's list or draw quick pictures of all the community helpers we can think of. Prompt with examples if needed:
- Who helps us when we are sick or hurt? (Doctor, Nurse, Paramedic)
- Who helps keep us safe? (Police Officer, Firefighter)
- Who helps us learn? (Teacher, Librarian)
- Who brings us our mail? (Mail Carrier)
- Who helps build houses or fix roads? (Construction Worker)
- Who grows our food? (Farmer)
- Who keeps our town clean? (Sanitation Worker)
As you list each one, briefly discuss what their main job is. "What does a firefighter do?" "Why is a teacher's job important?"
Activity 2: Draw Your Favorite Helper (10 minutes)
Now, choose one or two community helpers from our list that you find interesting. On a fresh piece of paper, draw a picture of that helper doing their job. While drawing, or after finishing, tell me about the helper you chose: What is their job? Why is it important for our community?
Conclusion (5 minutes)
Look at the drawing(s) together. Recap: "Wow, we learned about lots of people who help our community! Why is it good that we have all these different helpers?" (They keep us safe, healthy, help us learn, make sure things work, etc.). Briefly praise the student's participation and understanding. Ask: "If you could be any community helper for a day, which one would you choose and why?"
