Lesson Activities:

Warm-up: Shape Song! (5 minutes)

Hello David! Today we're going on a SUPER SHAPE ADVENTURE! We're going to meet some friendly shapes! Let's start with a fun shape song to get us excited. (Sing a simple song like: "Circles are round, circles are round, like a ball or a happy sun. Squares have four sides, squares have four sides, count them with me, one-two-three-four!")

Activity 1: Meet the Shapes! (10 minutes)

Let's meet our special shape friends today! We'll use our big, colorful felt shapes.

  • Circle: "Look, David! This is a CIRCLE! It's round and round, with no corners, like a yummy cookie or the bright sun! Can you say CIRCLE? Good job! Let's trace its edge with our finger. Round and round it goes! Can you make a circle with your hands?"
  • Square: "Next up is Mr. SQUARE! He has four straight sides, and they are all the same length! Let's count them: one, two, three, four! And see these pointy bits? These are four corners! Can you say SQUARE? Let's try to clap four times for Mr. Square's four sides!"
  • Triangle: "And here's our pointy friend, the TRIANGLE! A triangle has three straight sides! Let's count: one, two, three! And it has three pointy corners too! Can you say TRIANGLE? Let's try to tap our head three times for the triangle's three sides!"

Let's look around! This plate is a CIRCLE! This book is like a SQUARE! (Show examples).

Activity 2: The Great Shape Hunt! (10 minutes)

"Are you ready for a SHAPE HUNT, Detective David? Let's look around our room (or house) and find things that are shaped like a CIRCLE! ... (Give time and help) ... Great! Now, can you find something that looks like a SQUARE? ... Awesome! And what about a TRIANGLE? This one can be tricky, but let's look carefully!"

Praise every discovery enthusiastically! "You found a square pillow! That's fantastic!"

Activity 3: Shape Story Time! (10 minutes)

Let's snuggle up and read a story about shapes! (Read a book like "Mouse Shapes" or another shape-themed book).

While reading, pause and ask: "Look, David! What shape is the sun in this picture? (Circle!) And what shape is the house the mouse is building? (Square, Triangle!)"

Activity 4: Super Shape Art! (15 minutes)

Time to get creative with shapes! We have two fun options:

  1. Shape Collage: I have some colorful paper shapes already cut out for you – circles, squares, and triangles! Here's a big piece of paper and a glue stick. You can stick the shapes anywhere you like to make a cool picture! What will you create? A house? A train? A funny monster? (Adult helps with glue if needed, and talks about the shapes being used: "Oh, you're using a red circle for the head!")
  2. Shape Drawing/Tracing: Let's grab our chunky crayons and some paper! We can try to draw our shapes. "Let's try to draw a big CIRCLE, round and round!" (Guide David's hand if he likes, or demonstrate and let him try). "Now, let's try a SQUARE with its four sides." (Offer large outlines to trace if drawing freely is too challenging).

(Choose one activity, or do a bit of both if David is engaged. Focus on the fun of creation and naming shapes as they are used or drawn.)

Activity 5: Shape Sorter Fun (Optional, 5-10 minutes)

If we have our shape sorter toy, let's play! "Where does the circle block go? Can you find the circle hole? What about the square block? Push it in!"

This is a great way to match shapes!

Cool-down: Goodbye Shapes! (5 minutes)

"Wow, David, you were a fantastic Shape Explorer today! You found circles, squares, and triangles!"

Let's quickly say goodbye to our felt shapes: "Goodbye, Mr. Circle! (Wave) Goodbye, Mr. Square! (Wave) Goodbye, Mr. Triangle! (Wave)"

We can sing our shape song one more time to celebrate all your hard work!

You learned so much about shapes today! High five!
