Carson's Rainbow Shape Adventure!
Introduction (5-7 minutes)
- Welcome Song: Start with a fun welcome song. You can sing a simple 'Hello Carson' song or a color/shape themed song like 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' but adapted for shapes ('Circle, circle in the sky, shining bright up so high').
- Introduce the Topic: Say, "Carson, today we're going on a Rainbow Shape Adventure! We're going to find lots of amazing colors and fun shapes! Are you ready?" Show excitement.
- Color Chant: Hold up colored paper one by one (red, yellow, blue, green). Say the color name clearly and have Carson repeat it. "This is RED! Can you say RED?"
Activity 1: Shape Hunt and Sort (10-15 minutes)
- Introduce Shapes: Show pre-cut large shapes (circle, square, triangle) made from construction paper. Name each shape and trace its outline with your finger. "This is a CIRCLE. It's round and has no corners." Encourage Carson to trace it too.
- Shape Hunt: Say, "Let's go on a shape hunt in our house! Can you find something that is round like a circle?" Guide Carson to find 1-2 objects for each shape you've introduced. Keep it playful!
- Color & Shape Sort: Bring out the collection of small household objects/toys and the sorting containers.
- Color Sort: First, ask Carson to sort some items by color. "Let's put all the RED things in this basket!"
- Shape Sort (Optional/Simpler): If Carson is ready, try a simple shape sort. "Can you find all the round things (circles) and put them here?"
Activity 2: Rainbow Shape Collage (10-12 minutes)
- Set Up: Place the large white paper, pre-cut colored shapes (various colors and the target shapes: circles, squares, triangles), and a glue stick on the table.
- Create!: Say, "Now we get to make our own rainbow shape picture! You can choose any shapes you like and glue them onto your paper."
- Talk About It: As Carson works, talk about the colors and shapes he is choosing. "Oh, you picked a BLUE SQUARE! Where will you put it?" "What color is that circle?"
Wrap-up and Review (3-5 minutes)
- Show and Tell: Admire Carson's collage. "Wow, Carson, look at all the beautiful colors and shapes you used! Can you point to a red shape? Can you find a circle?"
- Goodbye Song: Sing a goodbye song or a clean-up song.
- Praise: Give lots of positive reinforcement for participation and effort. "You were such a great color and shape explorer today, Carson!"
Tips for Carson's Grown-Up:
- Keep it short and sweet! A 3-year-old's attention span is limited. Follow Carson's lead and if he loses interest in one part, move on or take a break.
- Focus on play and exploration rather than 'getting it right'.
- Repeat color and shape names frequently throughout the day, not just during the lesson. "Look, your ball is RED and it's a CIRCLE!"
- Adjust difficulty: If Carson is mastering these quickly, introduce more colors or shapes (rectangle, star, orange, purple). If he needs more practice, focus on just one or two colors/shapes per session.
