Welcome, Super Number Explorer Sama!

Get ready for an exciting adventure today! We're going to explore some special numbers called 'teen' numbers – like 11, 12, all the way up to 19. We'll discover their secret powers and become number detectives!

Warm-up: Our Friend, Number 10!

Do you remember our amazing friend, number 10? It's a super helpful number! Let's quickly count to 10 together. Can you show me 10 fingers? Fantastic! Now, let's use our cool linking cubes to make a special group of 10. We can call this our 'Ten Tower' or 'Magic Ten Stick'. This will be our super tool for today!

Activity 1: Building Teen Numbers - A Ten and Some More!

Guess what? All the teen numbers (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) have a 'Magic Ten Stick' hiding inside them, plus a few extra ones! It's like they have a superpower of being 'ten and some more'. Let's investigate!

  • Let's start with 11 (Eleven):
    • Grab your 'Magic Ten Stick' (that's 10 cubes grouped together).
    • Now, add 1 more cube (maybe in a different color so it stands out!). How many cubes do you have in total? Let's count: 1, 2, ... 10, and 1 more makes 11!
    • So, 11 is one 'Magic Ten Stick' and 1 extra one! We can say it like this: "Eleven is one ten and one one." Isn't that neat?
    • Let's also try this on our ten frame. Fill up one whole ten frame with counters (that's 10). Now, put 1 counter in a second ten frame. See? One full ten frame and one extra counter!
  • Next up, 12 (Twelve):
    • Keep your 'Magic Ten Stick'. How many extra cubes do we need to make 12? That's right, 2 extra cubes! Add them on.
    • So, 12 is one 'Magic Ten Stick' and 2 extra ones! Let's say it: "Twelve is one ten and two ones."
    • On the ten frames: one full ten frame, and 2 counters in the second ten frame. You're getting the hang of this!

We can continue this fun pattern for all the teen numbers up to 19! For each number, let's:

  1. Say the number out loud (e.g., "Fourteen!").
  2. Build it with your 'Magic Ten Stick' and the extra ones.
  3. Proudly say how it's made (e.g., "Fourteen is one ten and four ones!").
  4. Show it on your ten frames too!

Activity 2: Super Sama's Teen Number Drawings!

You're doing such a great job building teen numbers, Sama! Now, let's become artists and draw what we've learned. This is where you get to be creative!

  • I'll say a teen number (like "Fifteen!").
  • Your mission, Super Artist Sama, is to draw it to show the 'ten and some more' parts. You could:
    • Draw a group of 10 things (maybe a big circle with 10 little stars inside, or a long rectangle for your 'Magic Ten Stick') AND then draw the extra ones next to it. For fifteen, you'd draw your 'ten' and then 5 extra things.
    • Or, you can draw one ten frame all filled up, and then draw the extra dots on a second ten frame (or next to the first one).
  • After you finish your masterpiece, tell me about your drawing: "This is my picture of fifteen. It shows one ten and five ones!"

Let's try drawing these numbers: 13, 17, 11, 19, 14. Have fun with your colors!

Activity 3: "What's My Teen Number?" Game!

Time for a super fun guessing game, Sama!

  • I will build a teen number using a 'Magic Ten Stick' and some extra ones, but I'll hide the extra ones at first.
  • I'll show you the 'Magic Ten Stick' and say, "My number has one ten..." then I'll reveal the extra ones and say, "...and THIS many more ones!" (I'll show you the extra cubes).
  • Your job is to guess the teen number! (For example, if I show a ten stick and then reveal 6 extra cubes, you'd shout "Sixteen!")

We can take turns being the 'Number Builder' and the 'Number Guesser'! This will be a blast!

Wrap-up: You're a Teen Number Whiz!

Wow, Sama! You have been an absolutely amazing number explorer today! You are officially a Teen Number Whiz!

Can you tell me again, what's the special secret about numbers like 11, 15, or 18? What are they made of? (That's right! A ten and some more ones!)

You learned how to build them with cubes, draw them like an artist, and even play a game with them. That's so impressive! High five!
