Awesome Ears & Insect Feasts: A Bat-eared Fox Adventure!

Materials You'll Need:

  • Computer or tablet with internet access (for optional further research or videos)
  • Paper (plain and construction)
  • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
  • Optional: Shoebox or small box for diorama
  • Optional: Craft supplies for diorama (e.g., glue, scissors, twigs, sand, grass)

Let's Get Started! Meet the Bat-eared Fox!

Have you ever heard of an animal with ears so big they look like bat wings? And one that loves to munch on crunchy insects for dinner? Get ready to explore the amazing world of the Bat-eared Fox! These cool canids (that means they're related to dogs and wolves) are truly special.

What Makes Them So Unique?

Bat-eared Foxes are small, usually about 2-3 feet long including their fluffy tail, and weigh only about 7-12 pounds. That's about the size of a small dog!

  • Super-Sized Ears: Their most famous feature! Their ears can be over 5 inches tall. We'll find out why these are so important soon.
  • Fuzzy Fur: They have yellowish-gray or brownish fur with a black-tipped tail and black markings on their ears and face, which helps them blend into their surroundings.
  • Lots of Teeth: Unlike other canids, Bat-eared Foxes have more teeth – up to 50! But they are smaller and weaker, perfect for their insect diet.

Listen Up! The Power of Those Ears

Why such enormous ears? It's all about hearing! Bat-eared Foxes have incredible hearing. They can actually hear insects moving underground, like termites or beetle larvae. They turn their heads and rotate their ears independently, like tiny satellite dishes, to pinpoint the exact location of their next meal. It's like having built-in bug detectors!

Their ears also help them stay cool in the hot African climates where they live by radiating body heat.

Dinner Time! What's on the Menu?

While most foxes are known for hunting small mammals, Bat-eared Foxes are primarily insectivores. That means they mostly eat insects! Their favorite food is the harvester termite. They can eat millions of termites in a single year! They also munch on:

  • Beetles
  • Grasshoppers
  • Ants
  • Spiders
  • Scorpions
  • And sometimes small rodents, birds, or fruit if insects are scarce.

They often forage in groups, using those fantastic ears to listen for their prey.

Where in the World Do They Live?

Bat-eared Foxes are found in the grassy plains and savannas of Africa. There are two main populations:

  • One in eastern Africa (from Ethiopia and Sudan down to Tanzania).
  • Another in southern Africa (from Angola and Zimbabwe down to South Africa).

They prefer areas with short grass, which makes it easier to spot predators and find insects. They often live in dens that they dig themselves or take over from other animals like aardvarks.

Family Life and Pups

Bat-eared Foxes are often monogamous, meaning they pair up for life, which is quite sweet! The female gives birth to a litter of 2 to 6 pups after a gestation period of about 60-70 days. The male plays a very active role in raising the pups – he grooms, defends, and huddles with them. It's a real team effort!

Pups are born with their ears flopped down and eyes closed. They start to venture out of the den after a few weeks and are weaned by about 15 weeks.

Fun Facts!

  • The scientific name for the Bat-eared Fox is Otocyon megalotis. "Otocyon" means "ear-dog" and "megalotis" means "large-eared." Aptly named!
  • They are mostly nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), especially in warmer areas, to avoid the heat of the day.
  • Unlike many other canids, they are not particularly fast runners but are agile.
  • They communicate with each other using soft whines, chirps, and growls.

Time for Some Bat-Eared Fox Fun! (Activities)

  1. Draw Your Own Fox: Grab your paper and drawing supplies. Try to draw or paint a Bat-eared Fox. Pay special attention to its large ears and its fur patterns!
  2. Habitat Diorama: Using a shoebox or small box, create a miniature habitat for a Bat-eared Fox. Use construction paper for the sky and grass. You can add sand, small twigs for bushes, or draw some termite mounds!
  3. Super Sound Hunt (Indoor or Outdoor):
    • Have someone hide a small, quiet sound-making object (like a ticking watch, a crinkling piece of paper, or a very quiet phone alarm).
    • Close your eyes and try to locate the sound just by listening, like a Bat-eared Fox. You can even cup your hands behind your ears to see if it helps amplify sound!
  4. Amazing Ears Research: With a grown-up's help, look up other animals that have unique or very large ears (like elephants, fennec foxes, or jackrabbits). What are their ears used for?

What Did We Learn?

Let's talk about it! What are three things you found most interesting about the Bat-eared Fox? Why do you think their large ears are so important? Can you describe what they like to eat? Where in the world would you go to try and see one (if you were a wildlife biologist)?

Bat-eared Foxes are not currently endangered, but like all wildlife, they face threats from habitat loss and sometimes from diseases. Learning about these amazing animals helps us appreciate them and understand the importance of protecting their homes.

Great job exploring the world of the Bat-eared Fox today!
