Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply algebraic concepts to solve mathematical problems related to video games.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Prior knowledge of basic algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Character Level-Up

Choose a video game character that the student likes. Ask the student to come up with a mathematical expression to represent the character's level-up process. For example, if the character gains 10 experience points (XP) per enemy defeated, the expression could be "XP = 10 * number of enemies defeated." Have the student solve the expression for different scenarios and calculate the total XP earned.

  2. Activity 2: Currency Conversion

Select a video game that involves different currencies or in-game resources. Provide the student with exchange rates between different currencies within the game. Ask the student to solve algebraic equations to convert one currency to another. For example, if 1 gold coin is equal to 5 silver coins, the student could solve the equation "gold = 5 * silver" to convert silver to gold.

  3. Activity 3: Time and Distance

Choose a video game that involves traveling from one location to another. Provide the student with the speed of the character and the distance between two locations. Ask the student to solve algebraic equations to calculate the time it would take for the character to travel between the locations. For example, if the character's speed is 20 meters per second and the distance is 100 meters, the student could solve the equation "time = distance / speed" to find the time taken.

Eighth Grade Talking Points

  • "Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses letters and symbols to represent numbers and unknowns."
  • "In video games, algebra can be used to solve problems related to character progression, currency conversion, and distance calculations."
  • "By understanding algebraic concepts, you can make strategic decisions in video games to optimize your character's growth or resource management."
  • "Algebraic expressions and equations can help us model and solve real-world problems, such as those encountered in video games."
  • "Practicing algebraic thinking in a fun context like video games can improve your problem-solving skills and logical reasoning abilities."
