Art Mashup Challenge: Creative Collaborations!

Hi Cora! Get ready for a really fun art adventure where we'll become idea inventors! Today, we're going to explore how artists come up with amazing, new ideas by mixing and matching different thoughts, just like a creative chef mixes ingredients!

This lesson is all about Missouri 6th Grade Visual Arts Standard: VA:Cr1A.6 Combine concepts collaboratively to generate innovative ideas for creating art. That means we're going to work together to dream up some super cool and unique art concepts!

Materials You'll Need:

  • Paper or your sketchbook
  • Pencils, markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • "Concept Cards" (we can quickly make these together!)
    • Some cards with Things (like 'dragon', 'bicycle', 'floating island', 'secret key')
    • Some cards with Descriptions or Feelings (like 'sleepy', 'sparkling', 'gigantic', 'mysterious', 'made of candy')
    • (Optional) Some cards with Art Styles (like 'cartoonish', 'like a mosaic', 'super realistic', 'swirly like Van Gogh')
  • A timer (optional, just for fun!)

Let's Get Started! (Approx. 45-60 minutes)

Part 1: What are Concepts? (5 minutes)

First, let's chat about what "concepts" are. They're just ideas! An artist might think about an object (like a cat), a feeling (like joy), a place (like a magical forest), or even a way of making art (like using only dots).

Today, our super-skill is to take DIFFERENT concepts and smoosh them together to make something brand new and exciting. Imagine a "sleepy dragon" or a "sparkling bicycle" or a "mysterious floating island made of candy!"

Part 2: Making our Concept Cards (10 minutes)

If we haven't already, let's quickly make our Concept Cards. Grab some small pieces of paper.

  • On about 10-15 cards, write down different Things (nouns). Think of animals, objects, places, anything! You write some, I'll write some.
  • On another 10-15 cards, write down Descriptions or Feelings (adjectives or cool ideas). Think about how things look, feel, or act. Again, let's both contribute!
  • (Optional) If you want an extra challenge, we can make 5-10 cards with Art Styles or ways to make art.
Put each set of cards into its own pile or hat.

Part 3: The Mashup Game - Collaborative Brainstorming! (20 minutes)

This is where the collaboration happens! "Collaboratively" means working together. So, you and I will be a team of idea inventors!

  1. Draw your cards:
    • You draw one card from the "Things" pile.
    • You draw one card from the "Descriptions/Feelings" pile.
    • (If using) You draw one card from the "Art Styles" pile.
  2. The Mashup Reveal: Read your cards out loud! For example, you might get "Robot" and "Sleepy" and "Cartoonish."
  3. Brainstorm Together (This is the key part of VA:Cr1A.6!): Now, let's talk! How can we combine these?
    • What would a "Sleepy Robot" look like in a "Cartoonish" style?
    • Is it yawning? Are its metal parts droopy? Does it have Zzzzs coming out of its antenna?
    • What's its story? Why is it sleepy?
    • Let's throw out at least 3-5 different ideas for what this could be as an artwork. No idea is a bad idea at this stage!
  4. Quick Sketch/Note: On your paper, quickly jot down or sketch the core idea of your favorite combined concept. It doesn't have to be a perfect drawing, just enough to remember the idea. Title it with your card combination, e.g., "Sleepy Cartoon Robot."
  5. Repeat! Let's do this 3-5 times, taking turns drawing cards if you like, or drawing them together. Each time, we'll discuss and build on each other's thoughts for new artwork ideas. The goal is to generate lots of innovative (new and clever) ideas!

Remember: The fun is in playing with the weird and wonderful combinations! A "Mysterious Bicycle" or a "Gigantic Key" or a "Floating Island Made of Candy in a Mosaic Style" – how cool would those be to imagine and draw? Let's really push our imaginations!

Part 4: Pick Your Favorite & Plan Your Masterpiece Idea (10-15 minutes)

Look at all the innovative ideas we generated! Now, choose the one mashed-up concept that you find the most exciting or fun.

Let's talk about this chosen idea for a moment:

  • How do the two (or three) concepts you combined work together in your idea?
  • What makes it innovative or unique?
  • What kind of artwork would you make from this idea (a drawing, a painting, a sculpture, a collage)?
  • What details would you include?

On a fresh piece of paper, you can make a more detailed sketch or write a description of this chosen art idea. Explain what you're trying to show and how your combined concepts create something new and interesting!

Wrap-up & Reflection (5 minutes)

Great job today, Cora! You were an amazing collaborative idea generator!

  • What was your favorite part of mashing up ideas?
  • Did any combinations surprise you?
  • How did working together help us come up with more interesting ideas than if we just thought by ourselves? (That's the power of collaboration!)

You've successfully practiced combining concepts collaboratively to generate innovative ideas for creating art. This is a super important skill for all artists!

You can keep your concept cards and play this game anytime you want to spark new art ideas, either with me, by yourself, or with friends!
