Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and discuss character development in the TV show Friends, and apply their understanding to their own writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to episodes of the TV show Friends
  • Notebook or writing paper
  • Pen or pencil

Activities

  1. Watch an episode of Friends together, focusing on one character's development throughout the episode.

    After watching, discuss the following questions:

    • How did the character change or grow throughout the episode?
    • What events or actions contributed to this development?
    • Did the character face any challenges or conflicts? How did they handle them?
    • What do you think motivated the character's actions?
  2. Have the student choose a character from Friends that they find interesting.

    Ask them to write a character analysis, focusing on the development of that character throughout the series.

    Encourage them to include specific examples from the show to support their analysis.

  3. Once the analysis is complete, have the student reflect on their own writing.

    Ask them to consider the following questions:

    • What techniques did they use to analyze the character's development?
    • How can they apply those techniques to their own writing?
    • What can they learn from the character development in Friends to enhance their own character development in their stories?
