Beginning & Ending Sounds: A 4-Week Adventure for Mirabelle

Note for the Teacher (Parent): Each 15-minute lesson is designed to be a fun, hands-on experience. The goal is to build phonemic awareness through play. After each session, Mirabelle can complete one of her corresponding worksheets to reinforce the day's sound. Remember to over-exaggerate the sounds and have fun!

Week 1: Awesome Beginning Sounds

This week focuses on identifying the very first sound in a word. We will use common, distinct consonant sounds.

Day 1: Marvelous 'M'

  • Materials Needed: A bag or pillowcase (the "Mystery Bag"), 3-4 small items that start with the 'M' sound (e.g., marble, moon toy, monkey figure, mitten).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'M' sound together. "Mmm, mmm, mmm," like something is delicious. Look in a mirror and see how your lips press together to make the sound.
  2. Mystery Bag Game (10 mins): Tell Mirabelle you have a Mystery Bag filled with things that start with the 'mmm' sound. Have her reach in without looking, feel one object, and guess what it is. When she pulls it out, say the word together, emphasizing the first sound: "M-m-marble!"
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Go on a quick "M Hunt" in the room you're in. "I spy something that starts with 'mmm'..." (e.g., map, mat, mom).

Day 2: Super 'S'

  • Materials Needed: A shallow tray or bin, sand or salt, small toys that start with 'S' (e.g., snake, sun, star, spoon).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'S' sound together, like a slithering snake: "Sssssss." Trace a letter 'S' in the air with your finger.
  2. Sensory Sound Bin (10 mins): Hide the 'S' toys in the sand. Have Mirabelle dig to find a treasure. Each time she finds one, she yells "I found a s-s-snake!" Practice writing the letter 'S' in the sand with her finger.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Sing a silly 'S' song to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star": "S-s-silly s-s-silly s-s-snake, what a funny sound you make."

Day 3: Terrific 'T'

  • Materials Needed: Blocks or LEGOs, a small toy turtle (or a drawing of one).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'T' sound: "/t/, /t/, /t/." Pretend your tongue is tapping the top of your mouth. Tap your finger on the table each time you make the sound.
  2. Tower for Turtle (10 mins): Tell Mirabelle the turtle wants a tall tower. For every block she adds to the tower, she has to say a 'T' word (e.g., top, ten, tiny, teeth, table). You can help her brainstorm words.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): March around the room like toy soldiers, saying "T-t-ten hut!" with each step.

Day 4: Playful 'P'

  • Materials Needed: Bubbles, a pig puppet or stuffed animal.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'P' sound. Hold a hand in front of your mouth to feel the puff of air. "Puh, puh, puh."
  2. Pop for 'P' (7 mins): Blow bubbles for Mirabelle. Every time she pops one, she has to shout the 'P' sound, "Puh!"
  3. Puppet Talk (5 mins): Use the pig puppet. Make the puppet say silly things that start with 'P'. "I'm a p-p-pig who loves p-p-pizza and p-p-popcorn!" Let Mirabelle talk to the puppet.

Day 5: Beginning Sounds Party

  • Materials Needed: Picture cards or small objects for M, S, T, and P; four containers (bowls or baskets). Label each container with one of the letters.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Quickly review the four sounds from the week: M, S, T, P.
  2. Sound Sorting Game (10 mins): Place the containers on the floor. Give Mirabelle an object or picture card (e.g., a sock). Ask, "What sound does s-s-sock start with?" She says "/s/!" and places it in the 'S' basket. Continue until all items are sorted.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Cheer for all the great work she did: "Hooray for Mirabelle, our super sound sorter!"

Week 2: Fantastic Finishes (Ending Sounds)

This week, we listen for the very last sound in a word. This can be trickier, so we'll "stretch out" the words like a rubber band.

Day 1: The 'T' Stop

  • Materials Needed: 3-4 objects that end in 'T' (e.g., boat, cat, hat, bat). A red piece of paper or a red block (the "stop sign").

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Explain that today, we are listening for the sound at the END of a word. Practice saying "cat," stretching it out: "caaaaaaT." Emphasize the final sharp /t/ sound.
  2. Word Stop (10 mins): Say a word that ends in 'T' slowly. Have Mirabelle hold up the red "stop sign" as soon as she hears the final /t/ sound. "Let's try haaat." (She holds up the sign). Try some words that don't end in 't' (e.g., "dog") to see if she can hear the difference.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Pat your head and say words together that end in 't': "pat, hat, sat."

Day 2: Popping 'P'

  • Materials Needed: Ball, paper cups.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Practice the ending 'P' sound. "Let's say 'hop' and really pop that 'p' at the end!" Jump when you say "hop."
  2. Cup Topple (10 mins): Set up a few paper cups. Give Mirabelle the ball. Tell her to "stop on top" of a spot and "drop" the ball on the "cup." Say the action words together, emphasizing the ending 'p' sound each time.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Whisper words that end in 'p': "sheep, jeep, weep."

Day 3: Humming 'N'

  • Materials Needed: Paper and crayons.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Practice the ending 'N' sound. "Nnnnn." Feel how your nose hums. Stretch out the word "sun" -> "suuuuuuNNN."
  2. Listen and Draw (10 mins): You'll say a simple sentence. "Draw the sun." "Draw a man." "Draw a chicken." After she draws each one, say the word together and hold that final 'n' sound.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Pretend to run in slow motion. "We runnnnn and have funnnnn!"

Day 4: Gulping 'G'

  • Materials Needed: A stuffed dog and a log (or a brown block to be a log).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Practice the ending 'G' sound (the hard /g/ sound). Say "big," "dog," "log." Explain it's a sound you feel in the back of your throat.
  2. Dog on a Log (10 mins): Let's play! "The big dog sat on the log." "The dog gave his leg a tug." Have Mirabelle act it out with the toys, repeating the rhyming words with you and emphasizing the final /g/ sound.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Make a "big frog" voice and say "dig, pig, wig!"

Day 5: Ending Sounds Mix-Up

  • Materials Needed: Letter cards for T, P, N, G. Several objects from the week (e.g., bat, cup, sun, log).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Quickly review the four ending sounds: /t/, /p/, /n/, /g/.
  2. What's the Last Sound? (10 mins): Hold up an object, like the cup. Say "cup" together. Ask, "What is the very last sound you hear in cup?" Have her find and hold up the 'P' letter card. Do this for all the objects.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Give Mirabelle a high-five and tell her she has "terrific sound ears!"

Week 3: Vowel Power & More Beginning Sounds

This week we'll introduce the idea of short vowel sounds and practice with a few new beginning consonants.

Day 1: Awesome 'A' (short /a/)

  • Materials Needed: An apple, pictures of an ant and an alligator.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Introduce the short 'a' sound: "/a/, /a/, /a/," like you're about to bite a big a-a-apple.
  2. Act it Out (10 mins): Show the picture of the ant. "Let's pretend we are a-a-ants marching." March around. Show the picture of the alligator. "Let's make alligator hands!" (Chomp hands together). Say "a-a-alligator."
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Share the apple snack. As you eat, say, "Mmm, I love a-a-apples!"

Day 2: Dashing 'D'

  • Materials Needed: A drum (or a pot and a wooden spoon), a toy dog, and a toy duck.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'D' sound: "/d/, /d/, /d/." Feel your tongue tap the roof of your mouth, similar to 't' but with your voice turned on (voiced sound).
  2. Drum for 'D' (10 mins): Every time Mirabelle hears a 'D' word, she gets to hit the drum. Say a list of words: "d-d-dog" (hit!), "cat" (no hit), "d-d-duck" (hit!), "d-d-dig" (hit!), "sun" (no hit). Let her make the dog and duck dance to the drum beat.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Do a silly "dance" together.

Day 3: Funny 'F'

  • Materials Needed: A feather, paper fish with paperclips, a magnet on a string ("fishing rod").

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'F' sound: "/fffff/." Bite your bottom lip gently and blow. "Like a f-f-fan."
  2. Fishing for 'F' (10 mins): Scatter the paper fish. Go "fishing." When Mirabelle catches one, she says, "I caught a f-f-fish!" Count how many she can catch in f-f-five minutes.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Tickle her hands or feet with the feather. "F-f-funny f-f-feather!"

Day 4: Hopping 'H'

  • Materials Needed: A hat, a toy horse, a picture of a house.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Make the 'H' sound by breathing out onto your hand. "/h/, /h/, /h/." It's a quiet, breathy sound. "Like you're tired: ha, ha, ha."
  2. Happy Hop (10 mins): Put on the hat. Tell Mirabelle, "Let's h-h-hop to the h-h-house like a h-h-happy h-h-horse!" Hop around the room, saying all the 'h' words.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Sit down and give each other a big "h-h-hug."

Day 5: Vowel & Consonant Review

  • Materials Needed: Picture cards for words starting with A, D, F, H (e.g., apple, dog, fish, hat).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Review the sounds: /a/, /d/, /f/, /h/.
  2. Picture Hide and Seek (10 mins): Hide the picture cards around the room. Call out a beginning sound: "Find something that starts with /f/!" Mirabelle searches for the fish picture. Continue for all the sounds.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Make a "silly soup" by pretending to stir all the pictures in a pot and saying the words. "In goes the a-a-apple..."

Week 4: Beginning vs. Ending Sound Detective

This week is all about applying our skills. Can Mirabelle tell if a sound is at the beginning or the end of a word?

Day 1: 'S' at the Start or Stop?

  • Materials Needed: Two hoops or circles of yarn on the floor. Label one "Start" and one "Stop." Picture cards of words that start with S (sun, sock) and end with S (bus, glass).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Review the 'S' sound. "Ssssss."
  2. Start or Stop Sort (10 mins): Give Mirabelle a picture card, for example, "sun." Ask, "Do you hear the /s/ sound at the START or the STOP of s-s-sun?" She should place it in the "Start" hoop. Next, give her "bus." Stretch it out: "bus-s-s." She should place it in the "Stop" hoop. Continue sorting the cards.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Stand in the "Start" hoop and say "sit." Stand in the "Stop" hoop and say "kiss."

Day 2: 'T' at the Top or Tail?

  • Materials Needed: A train toy. Cards with 'T' words (e.g., ten, tiger, boat, cat).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Review the 'T' sound. "/t/, /t/, /t/."
  2. Sound Train (10 mins): The front of the train (the engine) is the "Top" (beginning sound). The back of the train (the caboose) is the "Tail" (ending sound). Show Mirabelle a card, like "tiger." She puts it by the engine. Show her "boat." She puts it by the caboose. Build a long train of 'T' words.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): March like you're on a train, saying "toot, toot!"

Day 3: Sound Switcheroo

  • Materials Needed: Movable alphabet letters (or letters written on small squares of paper). Focus on a-t, c-a-t, m-a-t, h-a-t, p-a-t.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Build the word "cat" with the letters. Sound it out: "/k/ /a/ /t/."
  2. Change the Beginning (5 mins): "Mirabelle the Magician, let's change this word! What if we take away the 'c' and put a 'm' at the beginning? What does it say now?" Sound out "m-a-t." Try it with 'h' and 'p'.
  3. Change the Ending (5 mins): Go back to "cat." "What if we keep the 'c' and 'a' but change the ending 't' to a 'p'? What is our new word?" Sound out "c-a-p."
  4. Wrap-up (2 mins): Celebrate her word-building magic!

Day 4: Story Creation Station

  • Materials Needed: A few random objects or picture cards (e.g., pig, net, sun, cup, top). A large piece of paper and a marker.

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): Lay out the objects. Identify the beginning and ending sound for each one with Mirabelle. "Pig. It starts with /p/ and ends with /g/."
  2. Silly Story (10 mins): Tell Mirabelle you will create a story together. You'll write it down as she says it. Start the story: "Once, there was a pig..." Encourage her to use the other objects in the story. "The pig found a big red cup." Write down her silly story, and read it back to her, emphasizing the key words.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Let her draw a picture to go with her amazing story.

Day 5: Sound Detective Celebration!

  • Materials Needed: A "detective" prop like a magnifying glass or a hat. Clue cards with pictures on them (e.g., a picture of a bed, a pen, a map).

Lesson Activity (15 mins):

  1. Warm-up (3 mins): "Detective Mirabelle, your mission today is to solve the sound clues!"
  2. Sound Hunt (10 mins): Give her the first clue. "Find something in this room that starts with /b/ and ends with /d/." Guide her to the bed. Let her find it. "You solved it! Bed!" Give her the next clue: "Find something that starts with /p/ and ends with /n/." (pen). Continue with 2-3 more clues.
  3. Wrap-up (2 mins): Award her a "Super Sound Detective" certificate (can be handmade) for solving all the cases and finishing the four-week adventure!
