Library Adventures: Lesson 1 of 35

Title: Your Official Library Card & The Parts of a Book

Materials Needed:

  • A few of Mirabelle’s favorite picture books.
  • An example of a real library card (your own, or a picture from the internet).
  • 1 piece of cardstock or a blank index card (about 3x5 inches).
  • Crayons, markers, and colored pencils.
  • A small photo of Mirabelle (optional, she can also draw a self-portrait).
  • Child-safe scissors and a glue stick.
  • Fun extras like stickers or glitter glue (optional).

Lesson Plan

1. The Mission Begins! (5 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Good morning, Mirabelle! We are about to start a grand adventure exploring the amazing world of books and libraries. What do you think a library is?"
  • Listen to her ideas and then explain: "That's right! A library is a wonderful place, like a treasure chest, but instead of gold, it's filled with stories and knowledge. To borrow treasures from a library, you need a special key. That key is a library card!"
  • Teacher: "Your very first mission on this adventure is to become an official member of our own home library. To do that, you need to create your very own, one-of-a-kind library card!"

2. Book Detective Work (5-7 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Before we make your card, let's look closely at one of our book treasures." (Pick up one of her favorite books). "Let's be book detectives and find its most important parts."
  • The Cover: Hold up the book. "This is the cover. It’s like the front door to the story. What do you see on it?" Let her describe the picture.
  • The Title: Point to the title. "These big words are the title. That’s the book’s name." Read the title together.
  • The Author: Point to the author's name. "This person is the author. The author is the storyteller who wrote all the words inside."
  • The Illustrator: Point to the illustrator's name. "And this person is the illustrator. The illustrator is the artist who drew all the beautiful pictures." (Note: Sometimes the author and illustrator are the same person!)
  • Repeat with one more book, asking her to point to the title and author.

3. Create Your Library Card (15 minutes)

  • Show Mirabelle the example library card. Point out where the name and picture go.
  • Teacher: "Okay, official librarian-in-training, it's time to create your card!"
  • Provide the cardstock and art supplies. Guide her through these steps, letting her do as much as possible on her own.
  • Step 1: Your Name. "The most important part! Let’s write your name, Mirabelle, right here at the top. You are the proud owner of this card." (Offer to help her with spelling or let her trace letters you write lightly in pencil).
  • Step 2: Your Picture. "Every library card needs a picture so the librarian knows who it belongs to! You can glue your photo on, or you can draw a beautiful self-portrait."
  • Step 3: Make it Magical! "This isn't just any library card—it's YOURS. Let's decorate it! Use your favorite colors, add some stickers, and make it sparkle. This card is your key to endless adventures."

4. Ideas for Different Paces

  • For Extra Support: Pre-cut the cardstock to size. Help her sound out the letters of her name as she writes them. Offer to help with the glue stick.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Encourage her to give her home library a special name (e.g., "The Mirabelle Reading Room") and write it on the card. She could also invent a "Member Number" or draw a unique barcode on the back with a marker.

5. Mission Complete & First Checkout! (5 minutes)

  • Hold a small, fun "ceremony."
  • Teacher: "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you, Mirabelle, an official member of our library! Congratulations!" (Hand her the finished card).
  • Assessment: "Now, to celebrate, please use your brand new card to check out your very first book." Let her choose any book from her collection. As she hands it to you, ask: "Excellent choice! Can you be the detective again and show me the title of this book? Who is the author?"
  • Looking Ahead: "You did a fantastic job today! For your next mission, we’ll learn how librarians organize all their book treasures so they can find them easily. It's going to be a fun scavenger hunt!"
