Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and appreciate the connection between bugs, space, dinosaurs, and history.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Internet access or books about bugs, space, and dinosaurs
- Optional: Art supplies for drawing or coloring
Activities
- Start by discussing bugs, space, and dinosaurs with the student. Ask them what they already know and what they would like to learn.
- Using the internet or books, research and find examples of bugs, space exploration, and dinosaurs from different time periods in history.
- Draw or print out pictures of bugs, astronauts, and dinosaurs and sort them into three categories: past, present, and future.
- Discuss the importance of bugs, space exploration, and dinosaurs in history. Talk about how bugs have existed for millions of years, how space exploration has helped us learn about the universe, and how dinosaurs roamed the Earth long ago.
- Encourage the student to create their own bug, space, or dinosaur using their imagination. They can draw, color, or even make a craft using materials they have at home.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Bugs are small creatures that have been around for a very long time. They help us in many ways, like pollinating flowers and decomposing dead plants and animals."
- "Space exploration is when scientists and astronauts go to space to learn more about the planets, stars, and galaxies. It helps us understand more about our universe."
- "Dinosaurs were huge animals that lived a long time ago. They roamed the Earth millions of years ago and left behind fossils that scientists study to learn about them."
- "Bug, space, and dinosaur discoveries have taught us a lot about history. They help us understand how life has changed over time and how our world has evolved."
- "Now it's your turn to be creative! Draw, color, or make your own bug, space, or dinosaur. Use your imagination to create something unique and special!"
