  • Graph paper
  • Ruler
  • Computer or gaming console with a video game of your choice

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Video Game Map
  2. Use the graph paper and ruler to design a map for a video game of your choice. Consider incorporating geometric shapes, such as squares, rectangles, and circles, as obstacles or platforms in your map.

  3. Calculate Area and Perimeter
  4. Select one of the geometric shapes you included in your video game map. Measure its dimensions and calculate its area and perimeter. Explain how these measurements can affect gameplay.

  5. Analyze Game Object Proportions
  6. Choose a character or object from your video game. Measure its height, width, and depth. Calculate the ratios of these measurements and discuss how proportions can impact the visual appeal and functionality of the character or object.

  7. Identify Symmetry in Game Design
  8. Observe the video game environment and identify instances of symmetry. Discuss the importance of symmetry in game design and how it can contribute to balance and aesthetics.
