Lesson Plan 1: Sound Hopping Adventure

Materials Needed:

  • 3 large pieces of paper or chalk for the sidewalk
  • A marker or chalk
  • A small toy or stuffed animal to be the "finishing prize"

Learning Objective:

Birdie will physically blend the sounds in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by hopping from one letter to the next, successfully reading the word "cat."

Lesson Steps:

  1. Warm-Up: Letter Sounds (2 minutes)

Say, "Birdie, let's warm up our voices! When I say a sound, you say it back!" Make the sounds for a few letters she knows well, especially c, a, and t. For example: "My turn: /c/ /c/ /c/. Your turn!" Keep it quick and energetic.

  2. Set Up the Adventure (1 minute)

On three large pieces of paper, write one letter each: C, A, T. If using chalk, write them on the ground. Space them about one "hop" apart. Place the prize toy a little bit past the 'T' paper. Say, "Look, Birdie! We're going on a sound-hopping adventure to get to your toy!"

  3. Model the Blend (I Do - 2 minutes)

You go first to show her how it's done. Stand before the 'C'. Say, "To get across, I have to make the sound of the letter I land on. Watch me!"

    • Hop to 'C' and say clearly, "/c/"
    • Hop to 'A' and say clearly, "/a/"
    • Hop to 'T' and say clearly, "/t/"
    • After landing on 'T', turn back and slide your hand under the letters in the air as you say the sounds faster: "/c/ ... /a/ ... /t/."
    • Then, say it smoothly: "Cat! I made it!"
  4. Guided Practice (We Do - 3 minutes)

Say, "Now let's do it together!" Hold Birdie's hand. Hop to each letter with her, and say the sounds together. "/c/..." "/a/..." "/t/..." After the last hop, blend it together for her again, encouraging her to join in. "C-a-t... Cat!"

  5. Independent Practice (You Do - 3 minutes)

It's her turn! "Birdie, you get to go on the adventure all by yourself now to rescue your toy! Remember to say the sound for each paper you land on." Cheer her on as she hops and makes each sound. If she gets stuck, gently remind her of the sound. When she hops to 'T', ask, "What word did you build?" If she needs help blending, say the sounds slowly with her, then faster, until it clicks.

  6. Wrap-Up and Extension

When she successfully reads "cat," celebrate! Let her get the prize. For an extra challenge, swap out the first letter for an 'S' or 'M' and see if she can read "sat" or "mat" on her next adventure.

Lesson Plan 2: Word Soup Sensory Bin

Materials Needed:

  • A small bin or container
  • A sensory filler (like colored rice, dried beans, or sand)
  • Letter magnets or puzzle pieces (specifically c, a, t, m, p, n)
  • A small bowl or "soup pot"
  • A ladle or large spoon

Learning Objective:

Birdie will find letters in a sensory bin, arrange them to build CVC words, and blend the sounds to read "cat" and "mat."

Lesson Steps:

  1. Warm-Up: Sound Hunt (2 minutes)

Hold up the letter 'A' magnet. "Birdie, what sound does this letter make?" (She says /a/). "Great! Now, can you find the letter that makes the /m/ sound?" Hold up two choices (e.g., 'M' and 'T') to help her focus. Repeat for /t/ and /c/.

  2. Introduce Word Soup (2 minutes)

Show her the sensory bin filled with rice and the hidden letter magnets. "Today, we are chefs! We're going to make some special Word Soup. Your job is to find the right letter ingredients and put them in our soup pot."

  3. Model the Recipe (I Do / We Do - 4 minutes)

Say, "The first recipe is for the word 'cat.' We need three sound ingredients. The first sound is /c/. Let's dig and find the letter 'c'!" Hunt for the 'c' magnet together. Once you find it, have her place it in the soup pot.

"Great! The next ingredient we need is /a/." Find the 'a' and add it.

"The last ingredient is /t/." Find the 't' and add it.

  4. "Stir" and Blend the Soup (3 minutes)

Take the letters out and line them up next to the pot: C-A-T. Say, "Let's see what our soup made! Let's read the ingredients."

    • Point to each letter and say the sound slowly: "/c/ ... /a/ ... /t/."
    • Use the spoon to "stir" under the letters while saying the sounds faster.
    • Finally, say, "It's cat soup! Yum!"
  5. Independent Practice (You Do - 4 minutes)

"Okay, Chef Birdie, your turn to cook! The next recipe is for 'mat.' What's the first sound you hear in m-a-t?" Guide her to identify /m/. Let her search for the 'm' in the bin and put it in the pot. Continue for 'a' and 't'.

Once she has the letters, encourage her to line them up and try to "stir" and blend the sounds herself. Provide help as needed, but let her lead.

  6. Wrap-Up and Extension

Celebrate her cooking skills! For more fun, you can have her "feed" the Word Soup to a stuffed animal. For an extra challenge, give her a new first letter (like 'p' for 'pat' or 'n' for 'pan') and see if she can make a new soup recipe on her own.

Lesson Plan 3: Build-a-Word Blocks

Materials Needed:

  • 3-5 building blocks (like LEGO Duplos or wooden blocks)
  • Masking tape or dot stickers
  • A marker
  • A picture of a cat and a picture of a hat (drawn or printed)

Learning Objective:

Birdie will use letter blocks to construct CVC words that match a picture, then blend the sounds to read "cat" and "hat."

Lesson Steps:

  1. Warm-Up: Picture Talk (2 minutes)

Show Birdie the picture of the cat. "What's this, Birdie?" (A cat). "Yes! What's the very first sound you hear in the word c-c-cat?" Emphasize the /c/ sound. Do the same for the picture of the hat, emphasizing the /h/ sound.

  2. Prepare the Blocks (1 minute)

Ahead of time, write one letter on a piece of tape or a dot sticker for each block. You'll need: C, H, A, T. If you have more blocks, you can add other letters like M or S.

  3. Model the Build (I Do - 3 minutes)

Place the picture of the cat on the table. Lay out the C, A, and T blocks. Say, "I am going to build the word for this picture. This is a cat. The first sound is /c/." Pick up the 'C' block. "The middle sound is /a/." Pick up the 'A' block and connect it to the 'C'. "The last sound is /t/." Pick up the 'T' block and connect it.

"Look! I built a word train! Let's read it." Point to each block as you make the sound: "/c/... /a/... /t/." Then slide your finger along the train and say, "Cat! It matches the picture!"

  4. Guided Practice (We Do - 4 minutes)

Take the blocks apart. "Let's build 'cat' together now." Hand her the blocks one at a time. "First we need the /c/ sound. Which block is that?" Let her find it. "Now we need /a/." Help her connect it. Continue for /t/. Once built, blend the sounds together to read the word.

  5. Independent Practice (You Do - 4 minutes)

Clear the 'cat' picture and bring out the 'hat' picture. Mix up the H, A, and T blocks. "Birdie, your turn to be a builder! Can you build the word for this picture? This is a hat. What sound does it start with?"

Let her search for the 'H' block and guide her through finding the 'A' and 'T' blocks to build her word train. Encourage her to sound it out herself once it's built.

  6. Wrap-Up and Extension

Praise her building skills! "Wow, you are a fantastic word builder!" For an extension, introduce a new vowel, like 'i', and new consonants, like 'p' and 'n', to see if she can build and read the word "pin". Or, have a "silly build" where you build "tac" and sound it out to show her that letter order is important.
