- Point to at least one family member in a photo when their name is said.
- Participate in a simple song about families through actions or sounds.
- Engage in a simple craft related to their family.
Lesson Structure
Part 1: Introduction (Hook & Objectives) - 3 minutes
1. The Welcome Song (Hook)
- Educator says: "Let's sing our family song! Are you ready?"
- Sing a simple, repetitive song like "The Finger Family" (Daddy finger, Mommy finger...) or "I Love My Family" to the tune of "Frère Jacques."
- Song Example (to "Frère Jacques"):
Mommy loves me, Mommy loves me,
Yes she does, yes she does.
Mommy gives me kisses, Mommy gives me kisses,
Mwah, mwah, mwah! Mwah, mwah, mwah!
(Repeat for Daddy, Brother, Sister, etc., changing the action). - Use big, happy motions like clapping, blowing kisses, or pointing to your heart. Encourage the child to join in.
2. State the Goal (Objectives)
- Educator says: "Today, we are going to look at pictures of our family! Our amazing family! We will see Mommy, Daddy, and YOU! It will be so much fun!"
Part 2: Body (Content & Practice) - 10-12 minutes
1. Photo Exploration (I Do, We Do)
- "I Do" (Modeling):
- Hold up a single photo of one family member (e.g., Mommy).
- Educator says: "Look! I have a picture. Who is this? This is Mommy! I love Mommy." Point to the photo clearly. "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy."
- "We Do" (Guided Practice):
- Place two photos in front of the child (e.g., Mommy and Daddy).
- Educator says: "Let's find Mommy together! Where is Mommy? Is this Mommy?" (Point to the correct photo). "Yes! Good job! Now, where is Daddy?" (Guide their hand if needed). "Yes! That's Daddy!"
- Use lots of praise and excitement.
- Mirror Time (Connecting to Self):
- Hold up an unbreakable mirror.
- Educator says: "Now, who is this? It's YOU! You are in our family, too! We love you!"
2. "My Family Picture" Craft (You Do)
- "You Do" (Independent Practice):
- Give the child a piece of construction paper or a paper plate.
- Present the large family photo.
- Educator says: "Let's make a beautiful picture of our family! Here is our family." (Point to the photo). "First, let's put glue on our paper. Can you use the glue stick? Swish, swish, swish." (Demonstrate).
- Help the child glue the family photo onto the paper/plate.
- Educator says: "Now, let's decorate! You can use stickers! Where do you want to put a sticker? Wow, a beautiful star for Daddy! What about a heart for Mommy?"
- Allow the child to place stickers or make marks with crayons around the photo. The goal is participation, not a perfect product.
Success Criteria Check-In (Formative Assessment)
- During the craft, point to the photo and ask simple questions.
- Educator asks: "Can you show me you? Where are you in the picture?"
- "Can you point to Mommy?"
- Observe if the child can point correctly, even with help. Acknowledge any attempt.
Part 3: Conclusion (Closure & Recap) - 3 minutes
1. Show and Tell (Recap)
- Hold up the child's finished craft.
- Educator says: "Look what you made! A beautiful picture of our family! Let’s show everyone!"
- Educator recaps: "You found Mommy, you found Daddy, and you found YOU! Our family is full of love."
2. A Loving Goodbye (Reinforcement)
- Sing the family song one more time.
- End with a big family hug (if other family members are present) or by hugging the picture.
- Educator says: "Yay family! We learned all about our amazing family today. I love our family so much!"
Assessment
- Formative (During Lesson): Observe the child’s ability to point to family members when prompted. Note their level of engagement and participation in the song and craft.
- Summative (End of Lesson): The child successfully participates in the craft activity. Ask the child to "Show me Mommy" on their finished artwork as a final check of understanding. Success is defined as an attempt to point, with or without assistance.
Differentiation
- For Younger Toddlers or Those Needing More Support (Scaffolding):
- Use only two photos at a time (e.g., just Mommy and the child).
- Use hand-over-hand guidance to help with pointing and gluing.
- Focus on just the song and pointing, saving the craft for another day if attention wanes.
- For Older Toddlers or Those Ready for a Challenge (Extension):
- Introduce more family members (grandparents, cousins, pets).
- Ask simple "who" or "what" questions: "Who is tall? Daddy is tall!" or "What does the doggie say? Woof!"
- Encourage them to say the family members' names out loud.
- Count the people in the photo: "Let's count! One... two... three people!"
