Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice first-grade level addition using numbers up to 10.
Materials and Prep
- Counting objects (e.g., blocks, buttons, or toys)
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or a whiteboard
Activities
-
Activity 1: Counting Objects
Take a handful of counting objects and place them in front of you. Count the objects out loud, emphasizing each number as you touch the object. For example, if you have 5 blocks, say "1" as you touch the first block, "2" as you touch the second block, and so on.
-
Activity 2: Addition with Objects
Choose two different numbers of objects from your collection. Count the objects separately, and then combine them to find the total. For example, if you have 3 blocks and 2 buttons, count each set of objects and then count them together to find the total: "1, 2, 3, 1, 2. The total is 5."
-
Activity 3: Addition with Numbers
Write down two numbers on a piece of paper or a whiteboard. Add the numbers together by starting with the first number and counting up to the second number. For example, if you have 4 and 3, say "4, 5, 6, 7." The total is 7.
