Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and create basic geometric shapes using magnatiles.
Materials and Prep
- Magnatiles set
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Magnatiles
- Identifying Shapes
- Creating Shapes
- Shape Sorting
Show the student the magnatiles set and explain how they can be connected to build different structures. Encourage the student to explore the tiles and experiment with connecting them.
Ask the student to find and create specific shapes using the magnatiles. Start with simple shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles. Give verbal instructions like "Can you create a square using the magnatiles?" and let the student build the shape.
Challenge the student to create their own shapes using the magnatiles. Encourage them to think creatively and explore different combinations of tiles. Provide guidance and support as needed.
Give the student a variety of magnatiles and ask them to sort the tiles based on their shape. They can create separate groups for squares, triangles, and rectangles. Discuss the characteristics of each shape as they sort.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today we are going to learn about shapes and how to build them using magnatiles."
- "Magnatiles are special tiles that stick together when you connect them."
- "Can you find a square-shaped magnatile? How many sides does a square have?"
- "Let's use the magnatiles to build a triangle. How many sides does a triangle have?"
- "Now, let's create a rectangle. How is a rectangle different from a square?"
- "Great job! Now, let's sort these magnatiles based on their shapes. Can you find all the squares and put them together?"
- "What other shapes can you create using the magnatiles? Be creative and try different combinations!"
